Compensation measures
Compensation and replacement measures under nature conservation and forestry law, from technical planning through implementation to management and monitoring.
Compensation that holds up in the procedure
Anyone who impacts nature and landscape must compensate for or replace the impairment. This is governed by the impact mitigation regulation of the Bundesnaturschutzgesetz, given concrete form by the states’ compensation ordinances, such as the BayKompV in Bavaria and the BKompV at federal level. greeNature takes on this part of your project completely, from the initial assessment to the final management round.
The decisive difference lies in the site. Because we manage our own portfolio of more than 10,000 hectares, the compensation area is fixed before planning even begins. This shortens coordination with the authority and removes the greatest uncertainty from your procedure.
Typical types of measure
Which measure is suitable follows from the impact, the natural region and the authority’s requirements. Frequently implemented measures include:
- Grassland development. Converting intensively used land into species-rich, extensively managed grassland with adapted mowing or grazing.
- Traditional orchards and woody structures. Establishing traditional orchards, hedgerows, field copses and fringes as connectivity structures in the agricultural landscape.
- Water bodies. Restoring watercourses, creating standing waters and riparian buffer strips.
- Forest. New afforestation, converting to site-appropriate mixed stands, and shaping woodland edges.
- Structural elements. Dead wood, stone piles, sand lenses and other habitat structures, often combined with species protection measures.
The process in four steps
- Assess the requirement. We determine the scope of compensation for your impact under the applicable state law.
- Define the measure and site. From our own portfolio or through targeted site acquisition, coordinated with the nature conservation authority.
- Implement. Technical planning, execution, coordination of contractors on the ground and inspection.
- Secure and evidence. Permanent site securing, management, monitoring and the documentation your permit requires.
From planning to management
Technical planning
Baseline survey, measure concept and assessment under the applicable state law, coordinated with the relevant nature conservation authority.
Implementation
We implement the measure on a secured site and coordinate agriculture, forestry and specialist contractors on the ground.
Management and monitoring
Development management, ongoing management and documentation for the entire commitment period. Management contracts generally run for 25 years.
