Eco-points and compensation areas
District of Greiz
Immediately available eco-points from authority-approved eco-accounts. greeNature is your full-service partner for compensation according to the Thuringian compensation model in the Vogtland and in the valley of the White Elster.
The District of Greiz at a glance
The district of Greiz is located in eastern Thuringia and forms the transition between the Vogtland and the valley of the White Elster. The district is named after the district seat Greiz with its Fürstlich Greizer Park. Thuringia is not divided into administrative regions, responsibility for compensation lies with the lower nature conservation authority at the Greiz District Authority.
Geologically, slate, greywacke and diabase of the East Thuringian slate mountains characterise the district. Over long periods, the White Elster and its tributaries have created deep gorge valleys with silicate cliffs, slope forests and narrow valley lowlands, while the north opens up to the Leipzig lowland basin.
Ecologically significant are the FFH site Elster valley between Greiz and Wünschendorf with near-natural oak-hornbeam and gorge forests and the Weida valley at the Weida reservoir with alder-ash forests and wet meadows. Upland meadows and grasslands of the high plateaus round out the habitat mosaic.
Economically, small and medium industry (medical technology in Zeulenroda-Triebes, the Köstritzer Schwarzbier brewery), the motorways A4 and A9 as well as the Wismut mining-affected landscape near Ronneburg define the district. Traffic, commercial and energy projects regularly trigger compensation requirements according to the Thuringian compensation model.

✅ greeNature on the ground
greeNature operates nationwide and manages projects throughout eastern Thuringia. We are familiar with the lower nature conservation authority at the Greiz District Authority, assessment according to the Thuringian compensation model and the natural region features of the Vogtland and White Elster valley from project practice.
Typical measures in the district of Greiz
Flowing water restoration
Dismantling of structures and creation of near-natural banks on the White Elster and Weida, creating spawning and breeding habitats for fish, kingfisher and upland pipit.
Grassland extensification
Conversion of intensively managed valley meadows into species-rich damp and upland meadows, habitat for meadow-breeding birds, amphibians and insect pollinators.
Forest conversion and new afforestation
Development of site-appropriate broadleaf mixed forests from conifer-dominated stands of the slate mountains, climate-resilient and structurally rich for black stork and forest species.
Traditional orchards
Creation and management of traditional orchard stands on the slopes of the Vogtland, habitat for little owl, garden redstart and wild bees.
Species protection CEF and FCS
Tailored measures under § 44 BNatSchG, such as bat shelters in former mining sites, kingfisher steep banks and habitat structures for the black stork.
Mining-affected areas and spoil heap greening
Restoration and near-natural design of mining-affected areas in the Ronneburg area, development of grasslands, shrub margins and stepping-stone habitats.
Protected species in the Vogtland and White Elster valley
black stork
The minimally disturbed slope and gorge forests of the slate mountains with their near-natural streams provide the black stork with feeding and breeding habitats. Forest rest areas and restoration of forest streams are typical measures.
About this species ›bats
Former mining sites and tunnels in the Ronneburg area as well as old cellars and tree cavities serve as winter quarters and nurseries. Shelter securing is a frequent CEF measure in demolition and construction projects.
About this species ›kingfisher
The kingfisher breeds in natural steep banks along the White Elster and Weida. Bank unconfinement and modelling of erosion banks create permanently suitable breeding sites.
About this species ›European wildcat
The contiguous forest areas of the Vogtland and East Thuringian slate mountains are part of the distribution range of the wildcat. Forest edge design and habitat networking improve its migration corridors.
About this species ›amphibians
Wet meadows and small waters at the Weida and Zeulenroda reservoirs are home to common frog, common toad and newts. Creation and networking of breeding waters are effective compensation measures.
About this species ›skylark
The open arable landscape of the Ronneburg arable rolling hills in the north of the district is habitat for the skylark. Lark windows and extensive field margins counteract population declines.
About this species ›Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?
traffic and infrastructure
Motorways A4 and A9 cross the district, with the addition of federal roads, town bypasses and bridge works. Expansion and new construction regularly trigger compensation and replacement obligations under §§ 13 to 15 BNatSchG.
industry and commercial
Small and medium-sized enterprises such as medical technology in Zeulenroda-Triebes and the Köstritzer Schwarzbier brewery as well as new commercial areas create compensation requirements when expanding and settling, greeNature supports land management.
energy and renewables
Wind energy on the Vogtland high plateaus and ground-mounted photovoltaic systems require nature conservation compensation and species protection measures, including for bats and raptors.
mining restoration and settlement
Restoration of Wismut mining legacy at Ronneburg and residential and settlement development in Greiz, Weida and Zeulenroda-Triebes go hand in hand with nature conservation compensation measures.
