Eco-points and compensation areas
District of Salzlandkreis
Eco-points and compensation areas in Salzlandkreis, assessed under the Ökokonto-Verordnung of the state of Saxony-Anhalt (ÖkoKVO LSA) and the state's assessment model. greeNature develops and manages compensation measures between the Magdeburg Börde, Vorharz and the Saale-Elbe floodplains, operating nationwide with experience of the authorities.
The District of Salzlandkreis at a glance
Salzlandkreis lies in the centre of Saxony-Anhalt and is the only district in the state that does not border any other federal state. The district seat and administrative centre is Bernburg (Saale). Saxony-Anhalt abolished its administrative regions (Regierungsbezirke) in 2004, so the district is directly subordinate to the state authorities. The district was formed in 2007 from the former districts of Aschersleben-Staßfurt, Bernburg and Schönebeck.
In terms of natural regions, the district extends from the fertile Magdeburg Börde with its deep chernozem soils, across the Östliches Harzvorland in the west (BfN natural region D20), to the broad river and floodplain landscapes of the Saale, Bode and Elbe in the east, which belong to natural region D10 (Elbe-Mulde lowlands). The landscape is characterised by extensive, intensively farmed arable land, crossed by watercourses and remnants of riparian forest.
Ecologically significant are the Natura 2000 sites along the rivers, including the FFH site Elbaue zwischen Saalemündung und Magdeburg, the FFH site Bode und Selke im Harzvorland, and parts of the Naturpark Unteres Saaletal. A particular feature are the inland salt sites, such as the salt site near Hecklingen with the rare FFH habitat type inland salt meadows (habitat type 1340*).
Economically, the district is shaped by potash and salt mining (Staßfurt), chemicals, cement, aluminium processing and the food industry on the Börde soils. Industrial settlement, post-mining effects, transport projects and the expansion of renewable energy regularly trigger impacts, for which compensation must be provided under §§ 13 to 15 BNatSchG and the assessment model of the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

✅ greeNature on the ground
greeNature operates nationwide and is familiar with the compensation law of Saxony-Anhalt. In Salzlandkreis, we work under the state's Ökokonto-Verordnung (ÖkoKVO LSA) and the state's own assessment model, which assesses land before and after the measure in eco-points and credits the achieved enhancement to the eco-account. We coordinate measures with the lower nature conservation authority of Salzlandkreis in Bernburg and know the particularities of the natural regions between the Börde, the Vorharz and the floodplains of the Saale, Bode and Elbe.
Typical measures in the district of Salzlandkreis
Farmland bird protection in the Börde
Creation of skylark plots, flowering strips, fallow land and extensive field margin structures in the cleared agricultural landscape of the Magdeburg Börde. Such measures create habitat for the skylark, northern lapwing, corn bunting and common hamster.
Floodplain restoration on the Saale, Bode and Elbe
Removal of bank reinforcements, reconnection of old river branches and development of softwood and hardwood riparian forest. This creates steep banks, flood channels and riparian forest as habitat for the kingfisher, beaver, fish and amphibians.
Inland salt sites and dry grassland
Management, rewetting and grazing of salt-influenced sites, as well as development of semi-dry and dry grassland on sunny slopes. These rare habitats are home to highly specialised, salt- and heat-loving species.
Traditional orchards, hedgerows and habitat network
Creation of hedgerows, field copses and traditional orchards in the Harzvorland. These structures connect habitats, create stepping-stone habitats and ecologically enhance the intensively farmed arable land.
Post-mining land and raw-soil sites
Development of raw-soil, successional and small water body sites on former potash, salt and lignite land. Open, nutrient-poor sites provide habitat for the sand lizard, wild bees and pioneer species.
Species protection: CEF and FCS
Advance compensation measures (CEF) and measures to maintain a favourable conservation status (FCS) under § 44 BNatSchG, such as replacement roosts for bats, sand lizard habitats, amphibian waters and steep banks for the kingfisher.
Protected species in the Magdeburg Börde, Vorharz and Saale-Elbe floodplains
Skylark
The open arable landscape of the Börde is core habitat for the sharply declining skylark. Skylark plots, flowering areas and extensively managed field margins are proven measures for supporting breeding populations.
About this species ›Northern lapwing
The northern lapwing breeds in damp field hollows and grassland of the Börde and the river floodplains. Created wet islands, seasonally damp hollows and adapted management secure its clutches in the event of impacts.
About this species ›Sand lizard
The strictly protected sand lizard (Annex IV of the FFH Directive) inhabits railway embankments, slopes, and warm, dry mining and spoil heap sites. In construction and infrastructure projects, replacement habitats are required as a CEF measure.
About this species ›Great crested newt
The great crested newt (Annex II and IV of the FFH Directive) needs larger, fish-free water bodies with rich submerged vegetation and structurally rich land habitats nearby. The creation and networking of suitable spawning waters are typical measures.
About this species ›Bats
Numerous strictly protected bat species use riparian forests, traditional orchards, and buildings and mining facilities as roosts and hunting grounds. Replacement roosts must be planned as an advance CEF measure for demolition and refurbishment.
About this species ›Kingfisher
The near-natural bank sections of the Saale, Bode and Elbe offer steep banks as nesting sites. In the event of impacts on watercourses, the modelling of steep banks and bank restoration are typical CEF measures for the strictly protected kingfisher.
About this species ›Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?
Potash, salt and post-mining effects
Staßfurt is regarded as the cradle of potash mining. Ground subsidence, the remediation of former sites and the subsequent use of post-mining land such as the Concordia See near Nachterstedt trigger impacts, for which compensation must be provided under the state's assessment model.
Chemicals, cement and aluminium
Chemical and soda production in Bernburg, cement works and aluminium processing shape the district. Plant expansions, new facilities and mineral extraction (limestone, gravel, sand) regularly generate a need for compensation under §§ 13 to 15 BNatSchG.
Transport and infrastructure
