The District of Burgenlandkreis at a glance

Burgenlandkreis lies in the south of Saxony-Anhalt on the border with Thuringia and Saxony. The district seat and administrative centre is Naumburg (Saale) with its cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. Saxony-Anhalt is not divided into administrative regions, for nature conservation compensation the lower nature conservation authority at the district (Environmental Office) is responsible. The district covers around 1,414 km², approximately 172,000 inhabitants and 33 cities and municipalities.

In terms of natural regions, the district lies at the transition between the Thuringian Basin and Marginal Plateaus (BfN natural region D18) with the Querfurt Plateau and the Lower Unstrut Plateaus, and the Central German black earth area (D20) with the fertile loess and black earth soils around Weißenfels, Lützen and Zeitz. Characteristic features are the valleys of Saale, Unstrut and White Elster as well as the limestone steep slopes of the Saale-Unstrut Triassic land. For natural region-appropriate assessment of the impact site, this classification is decisive.

Ecologically significant is the Geo-Nature Park Saale-Unstrut-Triassic Land, which with over 40 Natura 2000 sites and two EU bird protection areas is part of the European Natura 2000 network. On the warm-dry limestone slopes, dry and semi-dry grassland with thermophilic species are found, in the river floodplains, damp grassland and floodplain forest remnants alternate. The protected steep sites also form Germany's northernmost contiguous wine-growing region.

Compensation needs arise regularly in Burgenlandkreis through brown coal extraction and mining heritage in the Profen and Zeitz area, through transport and energy projects, through commercial and logistics settlements, and through residential and flood protection measures. Impacts and compensation are recorded according to the Saxony-Anhalt eco-account regulation (ÖkoKVO LSA) and the state's assessment model. greeNature assigns your impact correctly and provides suitable land and eco-points.

✅ greeNature on the ground

greeNature operates nationwide and develops compensation measures in Burgenlandkreis that suit the Saale-Unstrut region and its loess and limestone landscapes. We balance impacts according to Saxony-Anhalt's eco-account regulation (ÖkoKVO LSA) and the state's assessment model, coordinate measures with the lower nature conservation authority at the district and undertake planning, implementation, monitoring and permanent legal securing. Key focuses are management and development of limestone dry grassland, improvement of cleared loess arable landscapes through hedgerows, field margins and traditional orchards, restoration of Saale, Unstrut and White Elster floodplains, and ecological development of mining heritage sites. We support municipal and private project developers from initial assessment to recognised eco-account measure.

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of Burgenlandkreis

🐑

Dry and semi-dry grassland

Development and permanent management of species-rich lime calcareous grassland on limestone slopes, usually through extensive sheep and goat grazing and scrub clearance.

🌾

Arable land enhancement

Creation of field margins, flower and arable margin strips and extensively managed arable land in the cleared loess and black earth landscapes to promote open-land species.

🌳

Traditional orchards and field shrubs

Creation and replanting of traditional orchards, hedgerows and field shrubs that create habitat and connectivity structures in open agricultural landscape.

🏞️

Floodplain restoration

Development of watercourse buffer strips, damp grassland and floodplain forest fringes on Saale, Unstrut and White Elster, combined with improved watercourse continuity.

⛏️

Mining heritage and conversion

Ecological restoration of brown coal and mining heritage sites and conversion sites in the Profen and Zeitz area to near-natural open-land and water habitats.

🦇

Species protection on structures

Preservation and creation of roosts for bats and building-breeding bird species on churches, castles and farm buildings, also as an advance CEF measure.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Saale-Unstrut and Weißenfels land

🦎

Sand lizard

Inhabits dry grassland, vineyard walls and sun-exposed slopes of limestone hills and is regularly considered in impacts under § 44 BNatSchG.

About this species ›
🐦

Skylark

Characteristic species of open loess and black earth arable fields whose populations suffer from arable land removal and benefit from field margins and flower strips.

About this species ›
🦇

Bats

Several strictly protected species occur in forests, traditional orchards and structures in the region; roosts and hunting habitats must be secured.

About this species ›
🐟

Kingfisher

Breeds on steep banks of Saale, Unstrut and White Elster and depends on near-natural, structurally rich watercourse sections.

About this species ›
🐦

Northern lapwing and grassland birds

Damp grassland and floodplain areas of the Unstrut and Saale floodplains provide habitat for waders and grassland birds whose breeding sites are promoted through extensification.

About this species ›
🐈

European wildcat

Contiguous forest areas such as Zeitz Forest and Finne are considered habitat for European wildcat, for which forest connectivity and dead wood are significant.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

⛏️

Brown coal and mining heritage

Extraction in Profen open-cast mine and rehabilitation of mining heritage landscape in the Zeitz and Hohenmölsen area involves extensive compensation needs.

🛣️

Transport infrastructure

Expansion and new construction of federal and state roads and rail projects lead to land sealing and impacts on floodplains and open land.

🏭

Commerce and logistics

Designation and expansion of commercial, industrial and logistics sites, particularly in the Weißenfels and Lützen area, trigger compensation obligations.

🔆

Renewable energy

Wind energy installations and utility-scale photovoltaic, often on conversion and mining heritage sites, require nature conservation support and compensation.

Frequently asked questions

All about eco-points
in the district of Burgenlandkreis

The state of Saxony-Anhalt's assessment model in conjunction with Saxony-Anhalt's eco-account regulation (ÖkoKVO LSA) is decisive. Sites are assessed in value units before and after the measure; the enhanced difference yields recognisable eco-points. The basis is the impact mitigation regulation under §§ 13 to 15 BNatSchG.
The lower nature conservation authority at the Environmental Office of Burgenlandkreis District in Naumburg is usually responsible. Larger or supra-local projects may also involve the State Administration Office Saxony-Anhalt.
An eco-account allows enhancement measures to be implemented and recognised before a specific impact occurs. The value units achieved are credited according to ÖkoKVO LSA and can later be assigned to an impact as compensation. The claims are generally tradeable.
Compensation should functionally and spatially replace the impact. Therefore, natural region-appropriate assignment is important, in Burgenlandkreis especially to the Thuringian Basin and Marginal Plateaus (D18) and to the Central German black earth area (D20). greeNature provides land suited to the impact site and its habitats.
Typical triggers are brown coal extraction and mining heritage in the Profen and Zeitz area, transport and energy projects, commercial and logistics settlements, and residential and flood protection measures. Every substantial impact on nature and landscape must be compensated or replaced.
Beyond the impact mitigation regulation, we examine species protection prohibitions under § 44 BNatSchG. For affected species such as sand lizard, skylark or bats, we plan advance compensation measures (CEF) where needed to ensure ecological function is continuously maintained.
