The District of Donnersbergkreis at a glance

Donnersbergkreis lies in the north of the Palatinate in Rheinland-Pfalz and belongs naturally to the Nordpfälzer Bergland within the BfN major unit D52 (Saar-Nahe mountain and rolling landscape). The Donnersberg, which at 686.5 metres is the highest elevation in the Palatinate, gives the district its name. Rheinland-Pfalz has no administrative regions; the district administration is the lower nature conservation authority.

Geologically the region is shaped by the Rotliegend of the Saar-Nahe Basin, interspersed with volcanic rocks such as rhyolite and andesite that form the Donnersberg as a rounded mountain massif. The long mining history has left quarries, spoil heaps and tunnels that today form valuable secondary habitats.

Ecologically the spectrum ranges from extensive beech and oak forests of the Donnersberg massif across naturally intact valley streams of Alsenz, Glan and Appelbach to warmth-loving calcareous grasslands and traditional orchards on open slopes. A considerable part of the district is secured as FFH and bird protection area.

Shaping compensation requirements are the raw material extraction and cement works in Göllheim, wind energy expansion on the Nordpfälzer uplands and transport and business projects. Impacts are balanced according to §§ 13 to 15 BNatSchG and the Landeskompensationsverordnung (LKompVO).

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of Donnersbergkreis

🍎

Traditional orchards

Creation and management of traditional orchard stands on the slope areas of the Nordpfälzer Bergland, habitat for little owls, wrynecks and numerous wild bee species and networking element between forest and arable land.

🌳

Natural forest conversion

Development of site-appropriate beech and oak mixed forests at the Donnersberg massif, enrichment with old and dead wood and development of structurally diverse forest margins for woodpeckers, bats and hazel dormouse.

💧

Watercourse restoration

Removal of riverbank structures and creation of naturally intact watercourse structures at Alsenz, Glan and Appelbach, promotion of kingfishers, river lampreys and water-type fish species.

🌿

Calcareous grassland and dry habitats

Scrub removal and extensive grazing of warmth-loving porphyry and melaphyre slopes, preservation of semi-arid grassland as habitat for sand lizards, butterflies and grasshoppers.

🦎

Species protection CEF and FCS

Advanced measures under § 44 BNatSchG, small waterbodies for yellow-bellied toads in quarries, securing of bat roosts in old tunnels and replacement habitats for sand lizards on railway embankments and mine edges.

🌾

Hedgerows and habitat network

Creation of hedgerows and field copses in the depleted arable land of the uplands, stepping-stone habitats for skylarks, red-backed shrikes and brown hares between the forest areas of the district.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Nordpfälzer Bergland and Donnersberg

🐈

European wildcat

The contiguous broadleaf forests of the Donnersberg massif and Nordpfälzer Bergland are retreat area of the European wildcat (Appendix IV Habitats Directive). Forest networking, structurally diverse margins and rest zones are here central compensation objectives.

🦇

Bats in mine tunnels

Old mining tunnels and rock cellars serve bat species such as greater mouse-eared bat and Bechstein's bat as significant winter roosts. Roost securing and preservation of structurally diverse hunting grounds are typical measures.

🐸

Yellow-bellied toad and amphibians

Abandoned quarries and water-filled vehicle tracks provide the yellow-bellied toad (Appendix II and IV Habitats Directive) pioneer habitats. Creation of new sun-exposed small waterbodies is an effective CEF measure in the district area.

About this species ›
🐦

Woodpeckers and eagle owl

The bird protection area west of Kirchheimbolanden ranks among the most significant areas for the middle spotted woodpecker and harbours eagle owls, grey woodpeckers and black woodpeckers. Preservation of ancient oak forests and abandoned quarries secures their breeding sites.

🦎

Sand lizard

Warmth-loving slopes, quarry edges and railway embankments offer the sand lizard (Appendix IV Habitats Directive) suitable habitats. In construction and extraction projects, replacement habitats with sunbathing and refuge structures are a frequent part of planning.

🕊️

Skylark

On the open uplands and arable land of the Nordpfälzer Bergland, the skylark breeds, whose populations suffer from intensive land use. Extensively managed field margins and skylark windows act as FCS measures.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

🏭

Raw material extraction and cement works Göllheim

The Dyckerhoff cement works in Göllheim and the associated chalk and marl extraction shape the region economically. Extraction expansions, rehabilitation and future uses of quarries regularly generate compensation and restoration requirements according to LKompVO.

⚡

Wind energy on the Nordpfälzer uplands

Several wind farms have been established on the high areas of the district, further areas are in planning. Wind energy projects trigger compensation obligations and species protection assessments for bats and raptors under § 44 BNatSchG.

🛤️

Transport infrastructure

Motorway A63 between Kaiserslautern and Mainz, federal roads B47 and B48 and the Alsenztalbahn cross the district. Expansion, bypasses and maintenance lead to compensation and replacement obligations.

🏘️

Business and settlement development

Industrial sites such as BorgWarner in Kirchheimbolanden and Adient in Rockenhausen and new residential and business areas require nature conservation compensation. Farmers and forest owners can become active as land providers here.
