The District of StädteRegion Aachen at a glance

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of StädteRegion Aachen

💧

Species diversity

Protected species in the Aachener Land zwischen Börde und Nordeifel

🐱

Wildkatze

About this species ›
🦇

Bats

Old tunnels, bunker systems and woodlands in the region provide roosts for numerous bat species. Roost securing, substitute roosts and the conservation of linear features are common CEF measures in construction and wind energy projects.

About this species ›
🐸

Amphibians

Midwife toad, yellow-bellied toad and great crested newt occupy stone pits, excavation sites and small water bodies. The creation of sunny spawning waters and the linking of populations are proven compensation approaches.

About this species ›
🐦

Field birds of the Börde

The open arable landscapes of the Jülich Börde are home to skylark, northern lapwing and other open-land species. Wildflower strips, fallows and extensively used field margins counter habitat scarcity.

About this species ›
🐭

Hazel dormouse

The hazel dormouse lives in species-rich hedgerows, shrubby thickets and woodland edges in the region. The conservation and creation of networked woody structures secure its spread and simultaneously serve the general habitat network.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

⛏️

Structural change in the Rhineland coalfield

The coal phase-out, the edges of the Inden opencast mine and the decommissioning of the Weisweiler power station site bring extensive land changes. Restoration, afteruse and habitat network create substantial compensation requirements.

🛣️

Transport infrastructure

Expansion and maintenance of motorways A4, A44 and A544, bypass roads and measures on the Euregio railway trigger compensation and replacement obligations under the impact mitigation regulation, particularly through severance effects.

💨

Wind energy in the North Eifel

The expansion of wind energy in Simmerath, Monschau and Röetgen requires species protection assessments and FCS measures, especially for bats and wind-sensitive bird species.

🏘️

Settlement and commerce

Residential and commercial land in the area around Aachen and the technology region around RWTH lead to soil sealing. Compensation is achieved through unsealing, grassland enhancement and eco-points from recognised eco-accounts.

Frequently asked questions

All about eco-points
in the district of StädteRegion Aachen

The north of the region belongs to the BfN natural region D35 (Lower Rhenish Plain) with the Jülich Börde, the south to natural region D45 (Eifel) with Rur Eifel and High Venn. For compensation purposes, the natural region classification of the individual impact is decisive. greeNature determines this classification for you free of charge.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, impacts are assessed according to the numerical assessment procedure of the North Rhine-Westphalia Nature Conservation Act. Enhancements on recognised eco-accounts create eco-points, which are credited to the compensation requirement according to the North Rhine-Westphalia Eco-Account Ordinance. greeNature undertakes requirement determination, land allocation, authority coordination and documentation.
For projects in the towns and municipalities of the region, the lower nature conservation authority in the Environment Office (A 70) of the City Region Aachen, Zollernstraße 2, 52070 Aachen, is responsible. For projects in the city area of Aachen, the City of Aachen assumes the duties of the lower nature conservation authority due to its special status. greeNature coordinates the consultation process completely.
Frequently undertaken are the restoration of Wurm, Inde and Rur, grassland extensification in the river valleys, hedgerows and habitat networks in the Börde, moor and wetland protection in the North Eifel and naturally-oriented forest conversion. In the context of structural change in the Rhineland coalfield, large-scale restoration projects are gaining additional significance.
The region contains numerous FFH sites and bird protection areas of the Natura 2000 network. If a project affects such areas, an FFH compatibility assessment may be required. Regardless, the special species protection under § 44 BNatSchG applies, for example for European wildcat, black stork and bats, which can trigger advance CEF measures.
Yes. Suitable are, among others, intensively used arable land in the Börde, river valleys at Wurm, Inde and Rur and forest land with enhancement potential in the Eifel. You remain the owner and receive a usage fee. greeNature undertakes planning, implementation, management and monitoring and arranges the recognition with the nature conservation authority.
