The District of Rostock at a glance

The Rostock district lies in the north-east of Germany on the Mecklenburg Baltic coast and encloses the independent Hanseatic and university city of Rostock. At around 3,431 km², it is one of the largest districts in Germany by area. The administrative seat and district town is Güstrow. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has no administrative regions, so the district reports directly to the state.

In landscape terms, the district stretches from the Baltic coast, with steep banks and coastal forests between Kühlungsborn, Heiligendamm and Graal-Müritz (natural region D04, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Baltic coast), across the undulating Warnow-Recknitz-Land with the Güstrow and Bützow basins, to the wooded Mecklenburgische Seenplatte in the south (natural region D04). The east around Teterow and the Recknitz valley belongs to the Ostmecklenburg-Vorpommersche Lehmplatten (natural region D02).

Ecologically the district is defined by the ice-age young moraine landscape, with ground-moraine plateaus, end-moraine ridges, numerous lakes, Sölle and extensive fens. The near-natural river valleys of the Warnow, Nebel and Recknitz, the Krakow lake landscape and the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide nature park in the south are defining features. Large parts are protected under the FFH and EU Birds Directives.

The economy combines agriculture, tourism and commerce. The Baltic resorts, the transport hub with the A19 and A20 motorways, Rostock-Laage Airport and the expansion of wind and solar power regularly generate impacts whose compensation must be provided under the impact mitigation regulation of sections 13 to 15 BNatSchG and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern eco-account ordinance (ÖkoKtoVO M-V).

✅ greeNature on the ground

greeNature operates nationwide and supports compensation projects in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. We work to the requirements of the eco-account ordinance (ÖkoKtoVO M-V) and the guidance on impact mitigation (HzE 2018) of the LUNG, know the practice of the lower nature conservation authority in Güstrow, and are familiar with the nature-conservation characteristics of the coast, the Warnow-Recknitz-Land and the Seenplatte. This allows compensation areas and eco-points in the Rostock district to be allocated with legal certainty.

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of Rostock

💧

Bog rewetting

Raising water levels and removing drainage ditches in the fens of the Warnow, Nebel and Recknitz depressions. Rewetted bogs secure rare habitats, sequester carbon and create habitat for bog-specialist species.

🌊

Watercourse and floodplain restoration

Removal of bank reinforcements, restoration of continuity and reconnection of oxbows on the Warnow, Nebel and Recknitz. This creates steep banks, gravel bars and near-natural floodplains as habitat for fish, kingfisher and amphibians.

🌾

Grassland extensification

Conversion of intensively used land into species-rich wet grassland with adapted mowing and extensive grazing. The damp meadows of the river valleys are breeding and foraging grounds for meadow birds such as the northern lapwing.

🐸

Sölle and small water bodies

Creation and restoration of Sölle, dead-ice hollows and small water bodies of the young moraine landscape. These fish-free standing waters are key spawning habitats for fire-bellied toad, tree frog and great crested newt.

🦇

CEF and FCS species protection

Advance compensation measures under section 44 BNatSchG, such as replacement spawning waters for the fire-bellied toad, bat roosts on buildings and in woodland, and sand lizard habitats on rail and road embankments, complemented by population-supporting FCS measures.

🌳

Hedgerows, avenues and woodland-edge design

Creation of hedgerows, field copses and avenues typical of Mecklenburg, as well as near-natural conversion of structurally poor forests in the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide. These features connect habitats and upgrade the agricultural landscape.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Central Mecklenburg between the Baltic coast, Warnow-Recknitz-Land and the Seenplatte

🐦

Northern lapwing and meadow birds

The damp meadows of the Warnow, Nebel and Recknitz depressions are breeding grounds for northern lapwing and other meadow birds. Rewetting and extensive grazing secure populations here and are among the most effective compensation measures.

🌾

Skylark

The skylark breeds in the wide arable and grassland farmland of the Warnow-Recknitz-Land. Skylark plots and extensively used field margins are proven measures in the open agricultural landscape.

About this species ›
🐦‍⬛

Black stork

The black stork finds breeding and foraging habitats in the undisturbed, water-rich forests of the district, such as the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide. Undisturbed forest, near-natural streams and damp clearings are decisive for it.

About this species ›
🐟

Kingfisher on the Warnow and Recknitz

The near-natural bank sections of the river valleys provide steep faces as nesting sites. Where watercourses are affected by impacts, modelling steep banks and restoring riverbanks are typical CEF measures for the strictly protected kingfisher.

About this species ›
🦇

Bats

The district is home to a species-rich bat fauna, and the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide is designated as a bat reserve. Roosts are found in forests, avenue trees and buildings. Where buildings are demolished or renovated, replacement roosts are required as a CEF measure.

🐸

Fire-bellied toad and amphibians

The Sölle and small water bodies of the young moraine landscape provide habitat for the fire-bellied toad (Annex II FFH Directive), as well as tree frog and great crested newt. Creating and connecting fish-free spawning waters secures their breeding sites.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

🛣️

Transport and infrastructure

The A19 and A20 motorways, federal roads such as the B105, bypasses and Rostock-Laage Airport define the district as a transport hub. Upgrades and new construction regularly trigger compensation and replacement obligations under the impact mitigation regulation.

⚡

Energy and wind power

The expansion of wind farms in the agricultural landscape and of ground-mounted photovoltaic installations, together with the accompanying grid expansion, generate substantial compensation requirements and require species protection measures for breeding and resting birds.

🏖️

Tourism and settlement

The Baltic resorts of Kühlungsborn, Heiligendamm and Graal-Müritz, as well as residential and commercial development in the Rostock hinterland, lead to impacts whose compensation must be planned with particular care in sensitive coastal and forest locations.

🚜

Agriculture and commerce

Large-scale agriculture, livestock buildings, biogas plants and commercial land in the hinterland of the Rostock port give rise to nature-conservation compensation obligations. Landowners can take part by offering land.

Frequently asked questions

All about eco-points
in the district of Rostock

The Rostock district stretches from the Baltic coast (BfN natural region D04, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Baltic coast) across the Warnow-Recknitz-Land to the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte (D04). The east around Teterow and the Recknitz valley belongs to the Ostmecklenburg-Vorpommersche Lehmplatten (D02). For the assessment under the guidance on impact mitigation, the habitat composition at the impact site is decisive, and greeNature determines this for you.
The basis is the impact mitigation regulation under sections 13 to 15 BNatSchG. Impact and compensation are assessed via a habitat value procedure under the guidance on impact mitigation (HzE 2018) of the LUNG. Advance upgrading measures can be stockpiled via an eco-account under the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern eco-account ordinance (ÖkoKtoVO M-V) and, once recognised, managed in eco-points. greeNature handles requirement analysis, land allocation, coordination with the authority, and documentation.
The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Environmental Office of the Rostock district, Nature Conservation and Landscape Management Division, Am Wall 3-5, 18273 Güstrow. The State Office for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Geology (LUNG) provides the technical basis and the compensation register. greeNature coordinates all dealings with the authority for you.
Common measures include the rewetting of fens in the river valleys, the restoration of the Warnow, Nebel and Recknitz, the extensification of wet grassland, the creation of Sölle and small water bodies for amphibians, and species protection measures for fire-bellied toad, bats and sand lizard. Hedgerows, avenues and field copses are added in the agricultural landscape.
Yes. The Natura 2000 network includes, among others, the Warnowtal FFH site, the Krakow lake landscape and the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide nature park, which is also an EU bird protection area. Impacts near these areas can, in addition to area-based compensation, trigger assessments under the special species protection provisions of section 44 BNatSchG and, where applicable, FCS measures under section 45 BNatSchG.
Yes. Particularly suitable are drained fen land in the river valleys, intensively used grassland on the Warnow and Recknitz, and arable land with potential for Sölle, hedgerows and extensive grassland. You remain the owner and receive compensation for use. greeNature handles planning, implementation, recognition as an eco-account, and management and monitoring.
