The District of Nordwestmecklenburg at a glance

The district of Nordwestmecklenburg lies in the far north-west of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on the Baltic Sea and belongs to the Westmecklenburg planning region. The district seat is the Hanseatic town of Wismar on the Wismarbucht. As Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has no administrative regions, the district reports directly to the state administration. The district is defined by the Baltic coast with the island of Poel and the Klützer Winkel, as well as the wide ground-moraine plateaus of the hinterland.

Geologically the district was shaped by the Weichselian glaciation. Numerous Sölle (ice-age small water bodies) lie across the gently undulating ground-moraine plateaus with their fertile loam soils, while the coast between the mouths of the Trave and Warnow forms a coastline of erosion and deposition with steep banks, beach ridges, spits and lagoon waters. In the south-east, the Sternberger Seenlandschaft extends into the district as part of the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte.

Ecologically outstanding is the Wismarbucht and Salzhaff area, an EU bird protection area since 1993 and, since the 2000s, an FFH site within the European Natura 2000 network, covering a total area of around 42,500 hectares. Salt grassland, shallow-water zones and the offshore islands are resting, breeding and overwintering grounds of international importance for wading and water birds.

The economy is carried by the Wismar seaport, home to one of the largest timber handling clusters on the Baltic Sea, along with the timber and food industry, the former shipyard site, agriculture and coastal tourism. The Wismar motorway junction (A14/A20), wind power, photovoltaics and commercial development in the eastern hinterland of Lübeck regularly generate compensation requirements under sections 13 to 15 BNatSchG in conjunction with the ÖkoKtoVO M-V.

✅ greeNature on the ground

greeNature solutions operates nationwide. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern we align compensation consistently with the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern eco-account ordinance (ÖkoKtoVO M-V) and the guidance on impact mitigation (HzE). We coordinate measures with the district's lower nature conservation authority in Grevesmühlen and with the StALU Westmecklenburg, and know the natural-region characteristics of the coast, lake district and ground moraine from project practice.

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of Nordwestmecklenburg

🌾

Coastal salt grassland

Rewetting and extensive grazing of salt grassland on the Wismarbucht and Salzhaff, securing breeding and resting habitats for wading birds and restoring the natural influence of salt water.

💧

Watercourse restoration

Removal of culverts, creation of riparian buffer strips, and restoration of continuous sections on the Stepenitz, Radegast and Maurine, providing habitat for kingfisher and migratory fish species.

🐦

Meadow-breeding bird protection

Extensification and rewetting of wet grassland, adapted mowing dates and predator management in favour of northern lapwing and other meadow-breeding birds in the coastal lowlands.

🐸

Sölle & small water bodies

Desilting and creation of Sölle in the arable landscape of the ground moraine, connecting spawning waters for fire-bellied toad, great crested newt and other amphibians as CEF measures.

🌳

Avenues, hedgerows & manor parks

Supplementing and managing landscape-defining avenues, field hedgerows and manor parks as a habitat network and roosting and foraging habitat for bats and hedgerow-breeding birds.

🌱

Fen rewetting

Raising water levels in drained fens to restore bog habitats, with compensation effect under the ÖkoKtoVO M-V and a positive climate effect.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Wismarbucht, Klützer Winkel and Westmecklenburg

🦆

Coastal and resting birds of the Wismarbucht

The Salzhaff and its shallow-water zones are resting and overwintering grounds of international importance for wading and water birds such as pied avocet, terns, pochard and sea ducks. Undisturbed coastal zones are a key protected asset for projects in the coastal area.

🐦

Northern lapwing & meadow-breeding birds

Wet grassland and coastal lowlands are home to northern lapwing and other meadow-breeding birds. Extensification, rewetting and adapted use are typical measures to secure breeding success under the species protection provisions of section 44 BNatSchG.

About this species ›
🐸

Fire-bellied toad & amphibians

The ground moraine with its Sölle is a stronghold for the fire-bellied toad, alongside tree frog and common toad. Creating and connecting small water bodies is among the most effective CEF measures in the region.

About this species ›
🦎

Great crested newt

The great crested newt (Annexes II and IV of the FFH Directive) inhabits fish-free Sölle and small water bodies. It is a frequent target species for impacts in the arable landscape and requires advance replacement waters.

About this species ›
🦇

Bats in avenues & manor estates

Greater mouse-eared bat, serotine and Daubenton's bat use avenues, manor parks and old buildings as roosts and flight lines. Roost protection and preserving flight paths are regularly required for building and road projects.

About this species ›
🐟

Kingfisher on the Stepenitz & Maurine

Near-natural bank sections of the watercourses provide the kingfisher with nesting walls and foraging territory. Modelling steep banks and restoring riverbanks are proven compensation measures on the district's watercourses.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

⚓

Wismar seaport & timber industry

The Wismar seaport is one of the largest timber handling sites on the Baltic Sea. Port expansions, new timber and food industry sites, and the redevelopment of the former shipyard site trigger compensation and replacement obligations under the impact mitigation regulation.

🛣️

Transport infrastructure

The Wismar motorway junction (A14/A20), the connection towards the A24, bypasses and the Bad Kleinen rail hub generate nature-conservation compensation requirements during upgrades and new construction, often with species protection measures for bats and amphibians.

🌬️

Renewable energy

Onshore wind power and ground-mounted photovoltaic installations on ground-moraine sites require compensation and, where breeding and migratory bird populations are affected, FCS measures under species protection law.

🏭

Commerce & settlement in the Lübeck hinterland

Commercial development in Selmsdorf, Lüdersdorf, Dassow and Schönberg in the eastern catchment area of Lübeck, as well as residential development in Wismar and Grevesmühlen, give rise to impacts for which eco-points from recognised eco-accounts can be provided.

Frequently asked questions

All about eco-points
in the district of Nordwestmecklenburg

The district belongs mainly to the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Baltic coast (BfN natural region d04), with the Wismarbucht, the island of Poel and the Klützer Winkel. In the south-east, the Sternberger Seenlandschaft extends into the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte (d05). The natural-region allocation of the impact is decisive for the assessment under the impact mitigation regulation, and greeNature classifies it for your project.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, compensation is stockpiled via eco-accounts under the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern eco-account ordinance (ÖkoKtoVO M-V) and assessed in compensation values. The basis for the assessment is the guidance on impact mitigation (HzE). greeNature handles requirement analysis, allocation of suitable land from its portfolio, coordination with the authority, and documentation.
The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Nordwestmecklenburg district, lower nature conservation authority (Untere Naturschutzbehörde), Börzower Weg 3, 23936 Grevesmühlen. The StALU Westmecklenburg is also involved at state level. greeNature coordinates dealings with the authority from measure planning through to final acceptance.
In the EU bird protection and FFH site Wismarbucht und Salzhaff, the conservation objectives must be observed. Where an impact may be affected, an FFH compatibility assessment under section 34 BNatSchG is required, supplemented by the species protection assessment under section 44 BNatSchG. greeNature assesses the impact and plans CEF or FCS measures where they are required.
Proven measures in the district include rewetting and grazing of coastal salt grassland, restoration of the Stepenitz, Radegast and Maurine, the creation of Sölle for fire-bellied toad and great crested newt, meadow-breeding bird protection, and the safeguarding of avenues and manor parks as bat roosts and a habitat network.
Yes. Suitable land includes, among other things, coastal wet grassland, arable land with Sölle, and sites near watercourses. You remain the owner and receive compensation for use. greeNature handles planning, implementation, management and monitoring, and manages the land as a recognised eco-account under the ÖkoKtoVO M-V.
