The District of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte at a glance

The district of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte lies in the south-east of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and, at around 5,496 km², is the largest district in Germany by area. The district seat and major centre is Neubrandenburg, with Neustrelitz, Waren (Müritz) and Demmin as other larger towns. The district was formed in 2011 from the former districts of Demmin, Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Müritz, together with the previously independent city of Neubrandenburg. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is not divided into administrative regions.

The district takes its name from the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, a young moraine landscape formed during the Weichselian glaciation, with more than a thousand lakes, countless kettle holes and extensive fens. At its centre lie the Müritz, at around 110 km² the largest lake located entirely within Germany, as well as the Kölpinsee, Fleesensee and Kummerower See. Under the BfN classification, the district falls mainly within the natural region D04 (Mecklenburgische Seenplatte) and, in the north, within D02 (Ostmecklenburg-Vorpommersche Lehmplatten) with its fertile, arable ground-moraine soils.

Ecologically the district is defined by the Müritz National Park, at 322 km² the largest inland national park in Germany, whose Serrahn section, an old beech forest, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. It is joined by the Feldberger Seenlandschaft, Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide, and Mecklenburgische Schweiz and Kummerower See nature parks. The lakes, bogs and forests form resting and breeding grounds of European importance for cranes, white-tailed eagle and osprey, and are safeguarded through numerous FFH and bird protection areas of the Natura 2000 network.

The economy is shaped by tourism, the agricultural and food industry, and small and medium-sized businesses in the Neubrandenburg area. The expansion of wind power and photovoltaics, transport projects along the A20 motorway and federal roads, and the development of residential and commercial land regularly trigger impacts on nature and landscape. The required compensation is assessed uniformly across Mecklenburg-Vorpommern under the guidance on impact mitigation (HzE M-V), and recognised eco-account measures are managed under the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern eco-account ordinance (ÖkoKtoVO M-V).

✅ greeNature on the ground

greeNature develops and manages eco-account and compensation areas in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district under the compensation law of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. We secure suitable land, plan upgrades typical of the natural region such as bog rewetting, watercourse and riverbank restoration or forest conversion, and coordinate them with the district's lower nature conservation authority. Impact and compensation are assessed uniformly across the state under the guidance on impact mitigation (HzE M-V), and eco-points are recognised and booked via an eco-account under the ÖkoKtoVO M-V. From site selection through implementation to permanent management and documentation, we support project developers, municipalities and businesses so that compensation takes effect, wherever possible, within the affected natural region. greeNature operates nationwide.

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte

💧

Bog rewetting

Rewetting of drained fens in the lake and valley depressions. The measure halts peat loss, sequesters carbon and creates wet, species-rich grassland, with high nature-conservation upgrading value under the guidance on impact mitigation M-V.

🌊

Watercourse and riverbank restoration

Development of near-natural lake shores and silting zones, creation of riparian buffer strips, and restoration of streams and small water bodies as habitat for amphibians, dragonflies and waterfowl.

🌳

Forest conversion

Conversion of unnatural pine plantations into site-appropriate, climate-resilient mixed beech and oak woodland, secured over the long term and of high structural and habitat value for native woodland fauna.

🌿

Grassland extensification

Conversion of intensively used land in the depressions of the Great Lakes into species-rich damp and wet meadows, habitat for meadow-breeding birds such as northern lapwing and snipe, and a foraging area for the crane.

🦅

CEF/FCS species protection

Measures for white-tailed eagle, osprey and black stork (nest protection and undisturbed rest zones), bat roosts, and newly created amphibian waters, designed according to the requirements of the impact mitigation regulation M-V and, for affected species under section 44 BNatSchG, as advance CEF measures.

🌾

Enriching structure in the open farmland

Creation of hedgerows, field copses and kettle holes as stepping-stone habitats in the cleared agricultural landscape of the loam plateaus, complemented by flowering strips and skylark plots for open-land species.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Müritz and the Mecklenburg Great Lakes

🦅

White-tailed eagle & osprey

The Great Lakes and adjoining forests are among the most important breeding grounds for white-tailed eagle and osprey in Germany. The white-tailed eagle remains year-round, while the osprey hunts over the open water surfaces. Nest protection and undisturbed rest zones are typical protective measures.

🕊️

Crane & kingfisher

Bogs and shallow lake shores are resting and breeding sites of European importance for the crane. The kingfisher breeds on clear waters and steep banks. Typical CEF measures include shallow-water zones, seasonal ponds and near-natural bank erosion features.

About this species ›
🐦‍⬛

Black stork

The large, undisturbed forest areas around the Müritz and the Nossentiner Heide provide the black stork with breeding territory and foraging habitat on woodland streams and wet meadows. Forest conversion and the restoration of watercourses strengthen its populations.

About this species ›
🦇

Bats

Old beech forests, tree hollows and water-rich foraging grounds host a species-rich bat fauna, including greater mouse-eared bat and barbastelle. Roost protection and the securing of foraging habitats are effective compensation measures.

About this species ›
🐸

Amphibians in kettle holes and bogs

Kettle holes, bog waters and small water bodies of the ground moraine are habitat for fire-bellied toad, tree frog and great crested newt. Creating and de-silting sun-exposed, fish-free small water bodies is among the classic species protection measures of the Seenplatte.

About this species ›
🐦

Meadow-breeding birds in wet grassland

Northern lapwing and snipe use the wet meadows of the lake and river depressions as breeding grounds. Grassland extensification, rewetting and flood channels specifically improve their habitats.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

⚡

Energy & renewables

The expansion of wind power on the open ground-moraine plateaus and of ground-mounted photovoltaic installations regularly generates compensation requirements in the district. Additional requirements apply in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for the assessment of impact and compensation for mast-like structures such as wind turbines.

🛤️

Infrastructure & transport

The A20 motorway, federal roads such as the B96 and B104, bypasses, and the maintenance and expansion of rail routes trigger compensation and replacement obligations under sections 13 to 15 BNatSchG.

🏘️

Settlement & commerce

Residential and commercial areas in the major centre of Neubrandenburg as well as in Neustrelitz, Waren and Demmin, including logistics and production sites, require nature-conservation compensation. Owners of suitable land can benefit by offering it.

🚤

Tourism & water-sport infrastructure

Marinas, canoe resting spots, waterfront promenades and accommodation projects on the Müritz, the Kummerower See and the Great Lakes affect sensitive shore and silting zones and frequently trigger compensation and CEF measures.

Frequently asked questions

All about eco-points
in the district of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte

The district lies mainly within the BfN natural region D04 (Mecklenburgische Seenplatte), a water-rich young moraine landscape around the Müritz and the Mecklenburg Great Lakes. The northern part of the district belongs to the natural region D02 (Ostmecklenburg-Vorpommersche Lehmplatten), with fertile ground-moraine soils. For compensation, the precise natural-region allocation of the impact is decisive, and greeNature determines this for you.
Impact and compensation are assessed uniformly across Mecklenburg-Vorpommern under the guidance on impact mitigation (HzE M-V), with additional requirements applying to road construction and mast-like structures. Recognised eco-account measures are managed under the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern eco-account ordinance (ÖkoKtoVO M-V) and can already be stockpiled ahead of an impact. greeNature handles requirement analysis, natural-region allocation, land provision, coordination with the authority, and documentation.
The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Environmental Office of the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district, Platanenstraße 43, 17033 Neubrandenburg. The State Office for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Geology (LUNG) maintains the state's public compensation and eco-account register. greeNature coordinates all dealings with the authority for you.
Common measures include the rewetting of drained fens, the restoration of lake shores and watercourses, the conversion of unnatural pine plantations into site-appropriate mixed broadleaf woodland, the extensification of wet grassland for meadow-breeding birds, and species protection measures for white-tailed eagle, osprey, black stork, bats and amphibians.
Yes. The district contains the Müritz National Park, several nature parks, and numerous FFH and bird protection areas of the Natura 2000 network. Impacts in or near these areas can trigger an FFH compatibility assessment and, for affected species under section 44 BNatSchG, advance CEF measures to maintain a favourable conservation status (FCS). greeNature advises you on the statutory nature-conservation requirements.
Yes. Particularly suitable are drained fens with rewetting potential, wet grassland in the lake and river depressions, land near watercourses, and unnatural pine plantations with potential for forest conversion. You remain the owner and receive compensation for use. greeNature handles planning, implementation, management and monitoring, and coordinates recognition with the lower nature conservation authority.
