District of Groß-Gerau

Groß-Gerau district lies in the Hessian Darmstadt administrative region, in the heart of the Rhine-Main economic region and in the Hessian Ried at the northern Upper Rhine. greeNature plans, secures and implements compensation measures here, from eco-point assessment under the Hessian Compensation Regulation through to species protection CEF measures.

The District of Groß-Gerau at a glance

Across approximately 453 square kilometres, the district combines intensively used commercial and logistics locations with large protected areas such as Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue nature reserve, Hesse's largest nature reserve.

As part of the Rhine-Main economic region, settlement, transport and logistics create high demand for compensation and replacement measures under sections 13 to 15 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG).

The basis for assessment is the Hessian Compensation Regulation (KV), which evaluates impact and compensation in eco-points.

The old Rhine floodplain, the Hessian Ried and sandy areas characterise the natural region and species spectrum and determine which measures are ecologically sound.

🌿 Ecological features

  • Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue nature reserve covers approximately 2,400 hectares and is Hesse's largest nature reserve.
  • Large parts of the district are part of the EU bird protection area Hessian Ried with Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue, with the old Rhine also secured as an FFH area.
  • Frankfurt airport extends with partial areas into the district and is a major driver of impact and compensation projects.
  • The sandy areas of Groß-Gerau sand host heat-loving species such as the sand lizard and impose special requirements on compensation areas.
  • The district has approximately 29 nature reserves with a total of about 4,500 hectares.
  • The district is surrounded by the independent cities of Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Mainz and Darmstadt, which additionally increases settlement and land pressure.

✅ greeNature on the ground

greeNature operates nationwide and manages projects in Groß-Gerau district from the initial impact assessment through to permanent land management. We understand eco-point assessment under the Hessian Compensation Regulation, work with the lower nature conservation authority of the district and align measures with the natural characteristics of the Hessian Ried and Rhine floodplain. Whether calcareous grasslands for the sand lizard, floodplain development at the old Rhine or grassland extensification for meadow birds, we develop legally sound concepts and undertake full land management on request.

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of Groß-Gerau

🌊

Floodplain development at the old Rhine

Restoration of oxbows, flood basins and floodplain forest along the Rhine to regain ecological floodplain dynamics and habitats for amphibians, fish and floodplain forest species.

🌾

Grassland extensification in the Ried

Conversion of intensively managed land into extensively managed wet grassland that provides breeding and feeding habitat for meadow birds such as the northern lapwing.

🦎

Calcareous grasslands and reptile habitats

Development of open sand areas and dry grasslands on Groß-Gerau sand locations, supplemented by stone barriers and dead wood as a CEF measure for the sand lizard.

💧

Small water bodies and amphibian ponds

New creation of sunny, fish-free breeding waters for the great crested newt and other amphibians, coordinated with habitat networking in the Ried.

🌳

Replacement afforestation and woodland conversion

Forest expansion and conversion of site-appropriate floodplain and hardwood forests as replacement for forest loss, with native tree species.

🐝

Flower areas and field margins

Creation of multi-year flower strips and extensive field margins in the farmland that benefit field birds and insects on a permanent basis.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Hessian Ried at the northern Upper Rhine

🦎

Sand lizard

The sand lizard inhabits the sandy areas and railway lines of the district. Strictly protected under section 44 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG), it frequently necessitates advanced CEF measures and relocation into prepared habitats.

🐸

Great crested newt

The great crested newt is a species of Annex II of the FFH Directive and has been recorded in the waters of the Rhine floodplain. Retention and new creation of sunny, fish-free breeding waters are key.

About this species ›
🐦

Northern lapwing

The northern lapwing breeds in the open wet and grassland areas of the Hessian Ried. Its decline makes extensively managed grassland an important compensation measure.

About this species ›
🪶

Kingfisher

The kingfisher hunts at the old Rhine and ecologically sound waters of the district. Undisturbed riparian zones and steep banks secure its breeding sites.

About this species ›
🦇

Bats

Several bat species use floodplain forests and old tree stands as roosts and hunting grounds. Before felling, roost inspections and retention of cavity trees are necessary.

🐦

Skylark

The skylark breeds in the open farmland of the district. Flower areas, field margins and skylark access windows offset the loss of breeding habitats.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

🏭

Commercial and logistics areas

Commercial and logistics areas are being developed along motorways A3, A67 and A60, whose land sealing must be compensated under sections 13 to 15 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG).

✈️

Frankfurt airport and cargo area

The airport extends with partial areas into the district. Expansion and operation generate substantial compensation and species protection requirements.

🏘️

Residential and settlement development

New residential areas in Rüsselsheim am Main, Groß-Gerau and surrounding municipalities require landscape design and compensation areas.

🚆

Transport and flood protection

Road and rail expansion and flood protection measures on the Rhine lead to impacts requiring nature conservation compensation.

Frequently asked questions

All about eco-points
in the district of Groß-Gerau

In Hesse and thus in Groß-Gerau district, the Hessian Compensation Regulation (KV) applies. Impacts and compensation measures are assessed in eco-points. The Bavarian BayKompV does not apply here.
Eco-points are the accounting unit of the Hessian Compensation Regulation. They represent the ecological value of a site before and after a measure. The difference gives the upgrade value with which an impact is compensated.
For impacts within the district, the lower nature conservation authority of Groß-Gerau district with offices in Wilhelm-Seipp-Straße 4 in Groß-Gerau is generally responsible. For larger projects, the Darmstadt Government Presidency may also be involved.
In the district, species such as the sand lizard in sandy areas, the great crested newt in the Rhine floodplain and meadow birds such as the northern lapwing play a role. For strictly protected species under section 44 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG), advanced CEF measures may be necessary.
Large parts of the Ried and Rhine floodplain are part of the EU bird protection area Hessian Ried with Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue and FFH areas. Projects in or near these areas may require an FFH compatibility assessment.
Yes. We support projects from assessment through creation to long-term maintenance and monitoring, ensuring measures remain permanently secured.
