The City of Weiden in der Oberpfalz at a glance

Weiden in the Oberpfalz is an independent city and regional centre of northern Oberpfalz. The city lies at the intersection of the natural regions Upper Palatinate hilly region and Front Upper Palatinate Forest and is almost completely enclosed by Neustadt an der Waldnaab district. The Waldnaab runs through the city area from north to south and forms a continuous natural green corridor.

The entire city area lies in the Nature Park Northern Upper Palatinate Forest. Characteristic are extensive forest areas such as Mantel Forest, Altenstädter Forest and Fischerberg as well as several landscape protection areas, including the Waldnaab depression. On granite-dominated soils, forests, damp valley floodplains and settlement-fringing open-land areas alternate.

Ecologically significant are the naturalised Waldnaab floodplains with their damp meadows and riparian woodland and the traditional pollard willow avenues, which have received supraregional attention as a regional cultural landscape. These structures provide habitat for watercourse-dependent and wet-meadow-typical species.

Economically, Weiden is historically shaped by the porcelain and textile industry, with still-existing porcelain manufactures, and as a university site of the East Bavarian Technical University Amberg-Weiden a regional education and administration focus. Housing, commercial development and transport infrastructure regularly generate compensation requirements according to BayKompV in the city area.

Compensation in the city

Typical measures in the city of Weiden in der Oberpfalz

💧

Waldnaab watercourse restoration

Upgrading of bank areas, connection of floodplains and oxbows and development of naturalised watercourse structures along the Waldnaab, to improve spawning and habitats of watercourse-dependent species.

🧱

De-sealing in urban space

Removal of no longer used sealed surfaces in settlement and commercial areas, restoration of soil functions and establishment of green, water-absorbent areas as urban-fringe compensation.

🌿

Grassland upgrading in the surrounding area

Extensification and development of species-rich damp and wet meadows in the Waldnaab valley floodplains, as habitat for meadow-breeding birds and wet-meadow-typical insect communities.

🪵

Pollard willow and traditional orchard management

Retention and new establishment of region-typical pollard willow stocks and traditional orchards at settlement edges, habitat for cavity-dwelling birds, bats and wild bees.

🌳

Woodland and hedgerow structures

Establishment of hedgerows, field woodland and site-appropriate new afforestation as stepping-stone habitats and habitat network between settlement, open countryside and forest edge.

🦎

Species protection CEF/FCS

Prerequisite measures according to § 44 BNatSchG, such as replacement habitats for sand lizard on railway facilities and slopes and bat roosts on buildings and in woodland, tailored according to BayKompV.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Northern Oberpfalz on the Waldnaab

🦇

Bats

Buildings in city area, old woodland stocks and Waldnaab floodplains provide roosts and hunting habitats for several bat species. Renovation and demolition frequently require roost verification and CEF replacement roosts.

Sand lizard

Slopes, railway facilities and warm-dry ruderal areas provide sand lizard habitat. In construction and infrastructure projects, it is a common target species for which prerequisite CEF measures are required.

About this species ›
🐦

Kingfisher

Naturalised sections of the Waldnaab with steep banks and bank collapse areas offer the kingfisher breeding opportunities. Restoration of bank areas ranks among effective upgrading measures.

About this species ›
🐸

Amphibians
