The City of Schweinfurt at a glance

Schweinfurt is an independent city in the administrative region Lower Franconia and lies on both sides of the Main in the centre of the Schweinfurt Basin. With roughly 35.7 km², Schweinfurt is among Germany's smallest-area independent cities. Because the Bavarian administrative reform did not result in municipal amalgamations, the city area consists practically only of the densely built core city and is completely enclosed by Schweinfurt district.

In natural region terms, the entire city area belongs to the BfN natural region D56 (Main-Franconian plateaus), more precisely the Schweinfurt Basin major unit. The basin is one of Germany's warmest-driest and lowest-rainfall regions, with annual rainfall in many places below 600 mm. This special position characterises the habitats: warmth-loving dry and semi-dry grassland on the Main slopes, floodplain forest remnants on the Main and structurally rich woodland stocks in the city forest.

Ecologically significant are the Main as a supraregional habitat network and several protected areas in the city area, including the Saumain Nature Reserve, the landscape protection areas on Main slope and weir facilities and the Natura 2000 sites around city forest and Main valley. The Main and its floodplains are part of an EU bird protection area and important stopover and breeding habitats.

Economically, Schweinfurt is one of northern Bavaria's most significant industrial sites and a centre of the rolling bearing and supply industry (including SKF, Schaeffler with the FAG brand, ZF and Bosch Rexroth). Factory extensions, reuse of former conversion areas, housing construction and transport projects regularly trigger impacts whose compensation must be provided according to BayKompV in value points.

✅ greeNature on the ground

greeNature operates nationwide and is rooted in Bavaria. We know assessment according to BayKompV in value points and the features of natural region D56 (Main-Franconian plateaus) from practice. In the independent city of Schweinfurt, we coordinate with the city's lower nature conservation authority and take into account the warm-dry character of the Schweinfurt Basin in selecting and planning suitable compensation areas.

Compensation in the city

Typical measures in the city of Schweinfurt

🧱

De-sealing and greening

Removal of sealed surfaces on former industrial, transport and conversion sites, restoration of rootable soils and establishment of naturalised green structures. De-sealing is a high-value and land-saving compensation measure in the densely built city area.

💧

Main floodplain and watercourse restoration

Connection of oxbows, naturalised bank design and development of floodplain forest and damp structures along the Main and in the Saumain's vicinity. Such measures upgrade the habitat network and create spawning and breeding habitats.

☀️

Dry and calcareous grassland on the Main slopes

Management and development of warmth-loving dry and semi-dry grassland on sun-exposed Main slopes through extensive grazing, adapted cutting and scrub removal. These sites rank among the richest habitats in the Schweinfurt Basin.

🍎

Traditional orchards and hedgerows at settlement edges

Establishment and reactivation of traditional orchard stands and hedgerow and margin structures at the transition between settlement and open countryside. They network habitats and create stepping-stone habitats for birds, insects and small mammals.

🌳

City forest and forest edge upgrading

Development of site-appropriate broadleaf mixed forests, promotion of old and deadwood and structurally rich, stepped forest edges in the city forest and Forst Dianenslust. This strengthens habitats of building- and forest-dependent species.

🦎

Species protection CEF and FCS

Replacement habitats for sand lizard on railway embankments and dry sites, bat roosts on buildings and in forest, kingfisher steep banks on the Main, each as prerequisite CEF or population-supporting FCS measure according to § 44 and § 45 BNatSchG.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Schweinfurt Basin on the Main

🐦

Kingfisher on the Main

The Main and its oxbows offer with steep banks and fish-rich sections habitat for the strictly protected kingfisher. For impacts on watercourses, steep bank remodelling and naturalised bank restoration are typical CEF measures.

🦎

Sand lizard on Main slopes and railway facilities

The warm-dry slopes, slopes and railway embankments in the city area are core habitats of the sand lizard (Annex IV FFH Directive). In construction and infrastructure projects, replacement habitats with sunny and shelter structures are required as CEF measures.

About this species ›
🦇

Bats in city forest and on buildings

Woodland stocks of the city forest and Dianenslust as well as attic spaces and cellars of the core city provide roosts for several strictly protected bat species. For demolition and renovation, replacement roosts must be demonstrated as a prerequisite CEF measure.

About this species ›
🕊️

Skylark in open countryside

Open arable areas at the city edge and in the surrounding area are habitat for the skylark, whose populations suffer from loss of open breeding habitats. Skylark patches and extensively used arable margins are proven compensation measures.

About this species ›
🐸

Amphibians in Main floodplains and small waters

Common frog, common toad and other species settle ponds, oxbows and semi-wet depressions of the Main floodplain. Establishment and networking of fish-free spawning waters secure their breeding sites in construction projects.

About this species ›
🐤

Northern lapwing in damp arable depressions

In damp depressions of the Main floodplain and adjoining arable areas, the northern lapwing can occur as a ground-breeding bird. Extensification, establishment of wet patches and wet spots and disturbance reduction of breeding areas are suitable measures for this endangered species.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

🏘️

Housing and conversion

Reuse of former US conversion areas and residential and inner development projects create urgently needed housing space but trigger impacts on soil, green and open areas. Compensation must be provided according to BayKompV in value points, greeNature undertakes demand analysis and land provision.

🏭

Industry and commerce

As a centre of the rolling bearing and supply industry (including SKF, Schaeffler/FAG, ZF, Bosch Rexroth), Schweinfurt regularly generates compensation requirements through factory extensions, logistics and commercial establishment. greeNature is an experienced partner for compensation land management in industrial environments.

🛤️

Traffic and harbour

Expansion of federal and local roads, railway facilities and harbour extensions on the Main interfere with soils, woodland and watercourse banks and trigger compensation and replacement obligations, often combined with species protection measures for sand lizard and kingfisher.

⚡

Energy and infrastructure

Photovoltaic on conversion and marginal areas, district heating and grid expansion and technical infrastructure require nature conservation compensation and, for affected species, CEF or FCS measures according to § 44 BNatSchG.
