City of Schwabach

Schwabach is Bavaria's smallest independent city and lies in the Middle Franconian Basin south of Nuremberg, characterised by the Rednitz valley, sand habitats and extensive forest areas. For housing construction, commercial and infrastructure projects in the city area, greeNature accompanies nature conservation compensation according to the Bavarian Compensation Ordinance (BayKompV).

The City of Schwabach at a glance

Schwabach is an independent city in the administrative region Middle Franconia and is enclosed on its territory to the west, south and east by Roth district, while to the north it has grown together with the Nuremberg metropolitan area. As an independent city, it manages the tasks of the lower nature conservation authority itself.

In natural region terms, Schwabach belongs to the Middle Franconian Basin within the Fränkisches Keuper-Liasland. Characteristic are sandy soils, pine forests to the south, west and north and the Rednitz valley floodplain to the east of the city area.

The Rednitz valley has been part of the European protected area network Natura 2000 as a Natura 2000 site since 2004. Complemented by a dense network of landscape protection areas and protected landscape features.

For compensation and replacement in Schwabach as a Bavarian municipality, the Bavarian Compensation Ordinance (BayKompV) applies. Compensation requirements are determined in value points, based on the initial and target state of biotope and land-use types.

🌿 Ecological features

  • Natura 2000 site Rednitz valley (part of Natura 2000 since 2004) with naturalised watercourse sections, floodplain forest and damp habitats to the east of the city area.
  • Dense network of twelve landscape protection areas, predominantly forests, valley areas and the training area at Eichwasen.
  • Protected landscape features such as hedgerows, traditional orchards, watercourses and tree groups in built-up and urban-fringe areas.
  • Sand calcareous grassland and pine forests on the nutrient-poor sand soils of the Middle Franconian Basin as habitat for warmth-loving species.
  • Rednitz and the eponymous Schwabach stream as formative watercourse axes with restoration and upgrading potential.
  • Small-town character of city area with tight interlinking between settlement, open land and forest within the Nuremberg metropolitan region.

✅ greeNature on the ground

greeNature accompanies project developers, municipalities and landowners in Schwabach and surrounding Rednitz valley in nature conservation compensation according to the Bavarian Compensation Ordinance (BayKompV). We determine compensation requirements in value points, develop suitable compensation and replacement measures in the city area and surrounding area of Roth district and coordinate them with the lower nature conservation authority of the city. As a firm active nationwide, we combine the requirements of the densely built Nuremberg metropolitan area with upgrading opportunities in river floodplain, sand habitats and forest.

Compensation in the city

Typical measures in the city of Schwabach

🌊

Watercourse restoration

Upgrading of Rednitz and Schwabach through naturalised bank design, connection of old waters and development of floodplain forest margins in the area of the Natura 2000 site Rednitz valley.

🧱

De-sealing and removal

Removal of sealed surfaces in the city area and on conversion areas to restore soil, water regime and habitats.

🌾

Grassland and meadow upgrading

Extensification and development of species-rich grassland in urban-fringe surrounding area and in valley floodplain as compensation for impacts in open land.

🏜️

Sand habitats and calcareous grassland

Management and new creation of sand calcareous grassland and open sand areas on nutrient-poor soils of the Middle Franconian Basin.

🌳

Traditional orchards and hedgerows

Establishment and supplementation of traditional orchard meadows, hedgerows and field woodland, creating structural diversity as protected landscape features.

🌲

Naturalised forest conversion

Conversion of poorly structured pine forests to stable mixed stocks and development of stepped, species-rich forest edges.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Middle Franconian Basin / Rednitz valley

🦎

Sand lizard

Settles sunny sand calcareous grassland, railway embankments and forest edges in the city area. For impacts, prerequisite compensation measures (CEF) according to § 44 BNatSchG must be examined.

About this species ›
🐦

Kingfisher

Breeds at naturalised sections of Rednitz and Schwabach and depends on clean watercourses with steep banks and fish stock.

About this species ›
🕊️

Skylark

Breeding bird of open arable fields and meadows in urban-fringe surrounding area, sensitive to land loss and use intensification.

About this species ›
🦇

Bats

Several strictly protected species use forests, watercourses and buildings as hunting and roost habitat. Roosts must be considered in demolition and renovation.

About this species ›
🐸

Amphibians

Ponds, drainage channels and damp areas of the Rednitz floodplain provide spawning waters for strictly and specially protected amphibian species.

About this species ›
🌍

Northern lapwing

Ground-breeding bird of damp meadows and open valley areas, benefiting from restoration of extensively used grassland areas in the Rednitz valley.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

🏘️

Residential development

New building areas and densification in Bavaria's smallest independent city lead to land sealing and trigger compensation requirements according to BayKompV.

🏭

Commercial and industrial areas

Expansion of commercial sites in the Nuremberg metropolitan region requires compensation and replacement measures for soil, green structures and species.

🛣️

Transport infrastructure

Expansion of roads and the rail axis Nuremberg, Roth interferes with open land and woodland structures and requires compensation.

♻️

Conversion and urban renewal

Conversion of former military and industrial areas offers opportunities for de-sealing and associated upgrading measures.

All about eco-points
in the city of Schwabach

As an independent city in Bavaria, the Bavarian Compensation Ordinance (BayKompV) applies in Schwabach in conjunction with §§ 13 to 15 BNatSchG. Compensation requirements are determined in value points resulting from comparison of initial and target state of affected biotope and land-use types.
As an independent city, Schwabach manages the tasks of the lower nature conservation authority itself. Responsible is the city administration with its environmental protection office, which coordinates impact assessment, compensation measures and eco-accounts.
A CEF measure (measures to ensure the continued ecological functionality) is a prerequisite compensation measure according to § 44 BNatSchG. It must be effective before the impact so the ecological function of breeding sites for protected species such as sand lizard is continuously maintained.
Yes. Owners of suitable areas in the city area or surrounding Roth district can make them available as compensation areas, for instance via an eco-account. You remain owner and your upgrading is honoured.
Via an eco-account, upgrading measures are implemented before a specific impact and documented in value points. These points can later be allocated to a project as compensation. This creates time flexibility and ecological effectiveness.
Compensation-obligatory are impacts on nature and landscape, such as through residential and commercial construction, transport projects or infrastructure. For assessment, measure planning and coordination with the authority, greeNature accompanies the entire process.
