The District of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim at a glance

The district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim lies in the northwest of the Mittelfranken administrative region and, at around 1,267 km², is one of the largest districts in Bavaria by area. It stretches from the wooded Steigerwald in the north to the Frankenhöhe in the south and is crossed towards the east by the broad Aisch valley. The seat of administration is the district seat of Neustadt an der Aisch.

Geologically, the district belongs to the Fränkisches Schichtstufenland. The subsoil consists mainly of Middle Keuper sediments, gypsum keuper and sandstone keuper, which have shaped the characteristic steps and hills over millions of years. In the west, a loess-covered Gäu landscape reaches into the district with the Windsheimer Bucht and the Uffenheimer Gau, which, in natural region terms, already belongs to the Mainfränkische Platten. This transition explains the assignment to two BfN natural regions (D59 Fränkisches Keuper-Liasland and D56 Mainfränkische Platten).

The Aischgrund is ecologically defining, one of the largest continuous carp pond landscapes in Germany with several thousand ponds. Large parts of it belong to the Aischgrund EU Special Protection Area (DE-6331-471) and offer breeding, resting and feeding grounds for the marsh harrier, little bittern, kingfisher and numerous meadow-breeding birds. The near-natural beech and oak woodlands of the Steigerwald are habitat for the European wildcat, black stork and rare bat species, while the gypsum keuper slopes around Bad Windsheim support valuable dry grassland and calcareous grassland habitats.

Economically, the district is shaped by agriculture and pond farming, viticulture on the Frankenhöhe, mineral water extraction and small and medium-sized businesses. The A3 motorway, regional roads and railway lines, as well as the expansion of commercial areas, ground-mounted photovoltaics and grid infrastructure, regularly generate impacts that require statutory nature conservation compensation under the BayKompV.

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim

💧

Pond edge and silting zones

Ecological enhancement of carp ponds in the Aischgrund through shallow-water zones, reed beds and extensively managed bank strips, habitat for marsh harrier, little bittern, amphibians and dragonflies.

🌿

Wet meadows for meadow-breeding birds

Extensification and rewetting of grassland in the Aisch valley, supporting meadow-breeding birds such as the northern lapwing and common snipe through adapted mowing dates and shallow wet depressions (Blänken).

🦎

Dry habitat network

Management and creation of calcareous grassland and field margins on the gypsum keuper slopes around Bad Windsheim, stepping-stone habitats for the sand lizard, wild bees and warmth-loving insects.

🌳

Near-natural forest conversion in the Steigerwald

Developing structurally rich mixed broadleaf woodland with old and dead wood, improving habitat quality for bats, black stork and European wildcat.

🌾

Hedgerows and habitat network

Establishing hedgerows, field copses and traditional orchards in the cleared arable land of the Uffenheimer Gau, connecting habitats for farmland birds and small mammals.

🦇

Species protection CEF and FCS

Tailored measures under the BayKompV, such as amphibian spawning waters for the great crested newt, steep kingfisher banks on the Aisch, and roosts for building- and tree-dwelling bats.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Aischgrund, Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe

🐦

Northern lapwing and meadow-breeding birds

The wet meadows and pond margins of the Aischgrund offer habitat for the northern lapwing and other meadow-breeding birds. Typical measures include grassland extensification, rewetting and creating shallow wet depressions.

About this species ›
🐟

Kingfisher on the Aisch

Near-natural bank sections of the Aisch and the pond landscape offer the kingfisher nesting banks and food. CEF measures include shaping steep banks and securing fish-rich shallow-water zones.

About this species ›
🐸

Great crested newt in ponds

The great crested newt (Annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive) inhabits fish-free ponds and woodland pools. Newly created, sunlit spawning waters without fish stocking are a proven compensation measure.

About this species ›
🐈

European wildcat in the Steigerwald

The extensive, structurally rich woodlands of the Steigerwald are among the refuges of the European wildcat. Old and dead wood, along with unfragmented forest complexes, support the population.

About this species ›
🦇

Bats in old timber stands

Bechstein's bat, the greater mouse-eared bat and other species use the broadleaf woodlands of the Steigerwald and old buildings as roosts. Retaining tree cavities and providing roost opportunities are important FCS building blocks.

About this species ›
🦎

Sand lizard on dry sites

The sand lizard finds suitable habitats on gypsum keuper slopes, railway embankments and extraction sites. Stone ridges, sand lenses and sunlit field margins are common CEF measures in infrastructure projects.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

🛤️

Transport and infrastructure

The A3 motorway (Würzburg, Nuremberg) runs through the district. The expansion of federal and state roads, bypasses and railway lines regularly triggers compensation and replacement obligations under the BayKompV.

🏭

Commerce and settlement

New commercial and residential development areas in Neustadt an der Aisch, Bad Windsheim and the surrounding municipalities require statutory nature conservation compensation. Farmers and landowners can offer their land as compensation areas.

⚡

Energy and grid expansion

Ground-mounted photovoltaics on arable sites, wind energy projects at suitable locations, and the expansion of power lines and cable routes generate impacts that result in compensation and CEF measures.

⛏️

Raw material extraction and water management

Gypsum, sand and gravel extraction, mineral water extraction and water management works on the watercourse network lead to impacts that are compensated through restoration and habitat development.

Frequently asked questions

All about eco-points
in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim

The district belongs predominantly to the BfN natural region D59 (Fränkisches Keuper-Liasland) with the Steigerwald, Frankenhöhe and Aischgrund. The western area with the Windsheimer Bucht and the Uffenheimer Gau belongs, in natural region terms, to D56 (Mainfränkische Platten). For the compensation obligation under the BayKompV, the precise natural region assignment of the impact is decisive, greeNature determines this for you.
Eco-points are assessed under the Bavarian Compensation Ordinance (BayKompV) and provided from officially recognised eco-accounts. greeNature handles the requirements analysis, natural region assignment, allocation of land from its own portfolio, coordination with the lower nature conservation authority and all documentation obligations.
The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Neustadt a.d.Aisch-Bad Windsheim District Office, Konrad-Adenauer-Straße 1, 91413 Neustadt an der Aisch. greeNature coordinates all dealings with the authorities for you, from measures planning through to acceptance.
In the Aischgrund, the ecological enhancement of pond margins and silting zones, the extensification of wet meadows for meadow-breeding birds, the creation of fish-free amphibian spawning waters for the great crested newt, and kingfisher steep banks on the Aisch are particularly suitable. In the Steigerwald, near-natural forest conversion and the retention of old and dead wood are added.
Yes. Large parts of the district lie within the Aischgrund EU Special Protection Area (DE-6331-471), and there are also several FFH sites in the Steigerwald and along the watercourses. Impacts around these sites can trigger species protection assessments under § 44 BNatSchG as well as CEF or FCS measures under § 45 BNatSchG. greeNature advises you on all FFH and species protection requirements.
Yes. Wet grassland in the Aisch valley, ponds and pond margins suitable for extensification, gypsum keuper slopes with potential for calcareous grassland, and arable land for hedgerows and traditional orchards are all well suited. You remain the landowner, receive compensation for use and can continue farming many areas. greeNature handles planning, implementation, management and monitoring.
