The District of Neu-Ulm at a glance

The Neu-Ulm district lies in the far west of the Swabian administrative region, directly on the state border to Baden-Württemberg and on the edge of the Ulm/Neu-Ulm conurbation. In the north the Danube, in the west the Iller form the boundary of the district area. In terms of natural regions, the entire district belongs to the BfN natural region D64 (Danau-Iller-Lech-Platten), which here encompasses the Iller-Lech gravel plains and the Donauried.

The landscape is shaped by glacial gravel plains and ice-ridge landscapes, which the Iller and Danube deposited during cold periods. Between the dry, mostly arable gravel plains lie the damp lowlands of the Donauried, Rothtal and Illertal. This structure creates a mosaic of intensively managed open land, fens, wetland meadows and remnant riparian woodlands.

Ecologically particularly valuable is the Donauried, one of the largest contiguous fen and wetland complexes in Bavaria. Within the district lie four FFH areas: the Danube floodplains between Thalfingen and Höchstädt (7428-301), the Lower Iller floodplains (7726-371), the Obenhausen Ried and the Mussel Streams in the Rothtal (7726-372) as well as the Wasenlöcher near Illerberg (7726-302). These floodplains, wetlands and wetland meadows are habitat for meadow-breeding birds, amphibians and floodplain-typical species.

Economically the district is strongly industrial. Well-known enterprises such as Wieland-Werke, Bosch Rexroth, PERI and Pfizer as well as proximity to the major centre Ulm generate continuing residential, commercial and infrastructure development. Business extensions, transport projects along the A7 and Iller valley axis as well as ground-mounted photovoltaic systems on the gravel plains regularly trigger substantial compensation requirements according to BayKompV.

✅ greeNature on the ground

greeNature operates across Bavaria and from practical experience knows the nature conservation requirements in the Danube-Iller area. We coordinate measures with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority at Neu-Ulm District Office, know the regional land pools and the specific requirements of compensation in the Donauried, in the Iller floodplains and on the gravel plains.

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of Neu-Ulm

🌾

Fen rewetting

Rewetting of drained fen land in the Donauried, raising groundwater levels and developing wetland meadows. Such measures combine compensation according to BayKompV with climate protection through fen conservation.

🌿

Grassland extensification for meadow-breeding birds

Conversion of intensively managed wet meadows into species-rich, extensively mown wet grassland in the Donauried and Rothtal, creating habitat for northern lapwing, great curlew and other meadow-breeding birds.

💧

Iller floodplain revitalisation

Creation and reconnection of oxbows, slope gentling and riparian woodland development along the Iller, upgrading of spawning and breeding habitats in the Lower Iller floodplains.

🦎

Species protection CEF and FCS

Tailored measures according to BayKompV, such as sand lizard habitats on railway embankments and gravel surfaces, beaver conflict management on the Iller and Danube as well as bat roosts in riparian woodlands.

🌳

Hedgerows and habitat network

Creation of hedgerows, field woodlands and stepping-stone habitats in the denuded arable landscape of the Iller-Lech gravel plains, networking of isolated habitats for field birds and insects.

🏞️

Wetland meadow and water body management

Management and development of the Mussel Streams and wetland meadows in the Rothtal, conservation of calcareous streams and poor wet meadows as high-value compensation areas.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Danube-Iller area and Iller-Lech Plain

🐦

Northern lapwing and meadow-breeding birds in the Donauried

The Donauried is one of Bavaria's most important meadow-breeding bird areas. Northern lapwing and great curlew breed on damp, extensively managed meadows. Grassland extensification and rewetting are typical measures for their conservation.

About this species ›
🐟

Kingfisher and beaver on the Iller and Danube

Near-natural river sections and steep banks on the Iller and Danube provide the kingfisher with breeding sites, whilst the beaver actively shapes the floodplains. CEF measures include steep bank modelling and the creation of floodplain water bodies.

About this species ›
🦎

Sand lizard on gravel surfaces

Warm, sun-exposed railway embankments, gravel extraction sites and margins of the gravel plains are habitat for the sand lizard. It is a frequent target species in infrastructure and commercial projects and often requires advanced CEF measures.

About this species ›
🐸

Amphibians in floodplains and wetlands

Yellow-bellied toad, tree frog and common toad inhabit riparian woodlands, oxbows and wetland areas on the Iller and Danube. Newly created small water bodies are effective compensation measures for amphibians.

About this species ›
🌊

Great crested newt in the wetlands

In the fens and small water bodies of the Donauried and Rothtal, the great crested newt occurs, a species of Annex II of the FFH Directive. Conservation and creation of sunny, fish-free spawning waters secure its populations.

🕊️

Skylark in the open landscape

On the extensive, arable-dominated Iller-Lech gravel plains, the skylark breeds. Wildflower strips, skylark patches and extensification measures counter the decline in field birds.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

🏭

Industry and commerce

The district is home to major industrial enterprises such as Wieland-Werke, Bosch Rexroth, PERI and Pfizer. Business extensions and new business areas in Neu-Ulm, Vöhringen, Illertissen and Senden regularly generate high compensation requirements according to BayKompV.

🛣️

Infrastructure and transport

Expansion of transport routes in the Iller valley, measures on the A7, bypasses and expansion of rail routes in the Ulm/Neu-Ulm region trigger compensation and replacement obligations.

🏘️

Settlement development

Proximity to the major centre Ulm drives residential construction and commercial land development in Neu-Ulm, Senden and Elchingen. Impacts on open land require nature conservation compensation, for which landowners can be potential providers.

☀️

Energy and renewable energy

Ground-mounted photovoltaic systems on the gravel plains and hydropower use on the Iller require nature conservation compensation and partly species protection measures according to § 44 BNatSchG.
