The District of Mühldorf am Inn at a glance
The district of Mühldorf am Inn is located in the east of Upper Bavaria between the Munich metropolitan area and the Upper Bavarian chemical triangle. The Inn flows through the district from east to west, the Isen drains the northern part and flows into the Inn near Töging. The district capital is Mühldorf am Inn, the largest town and industrial focus is Waldkraiburg. The district belongs to the European Metropolitan Region Munich and is well connected via the A94 motorway and the Mühldorf railway junction.
Landscape-wise, the district is divided into three parts. In the north, the tertiary hilly landscape of the Isar-Inn Shale Plains (natural region D65) with forests, arable land and incised stream valleys characterises the picture. In the middle lies the broad lower terrace landscape of the lower Inn valley with Würm-age and post-glacial shales, in which the Inn flows in wide meanders. To the south, the terraces transition into the ice-age-formed moraine and hilly landscape of the pre-Alpine region (natural region D66).
Ecologically significant are above all the Inn floodplains with their barrages, as well as the steep flank forests along the Inn valley, which are secured as an FFH area. The FFH area Inn valley and adjacent tributaries comprises a largely near-natural watercourse system, with areas such as Grünbach and Bucher Moos as well as designated great crested newt habitats added. In total, around 2,520 hectares are designated as Natura 2000 areas in the district. These habitats are home to, among others, kingfisher, great crested newt, meadow-breeding birds and numerous bat species.
Economically, the industrial town of Waldkraiburg with plastics, metal and paper processing is characteristic, supplemented by small and medium-sized manufacturing in Mühldorf, Töging and Ampfing, as well as widespread agriculture and forestry. High compensation requirements arise from infrastructure projects such as the A94 motorway, the expansion of the Munich, Mühldorf and Freilassing railway line (ABS 38), through commercial and industrial settlements, as well as freestanding photovoltaics. For these impacts we plan and realise natural-region-appropriate compensation measures according to BayKompV.

✅ greeNature on the ground
greeNature supports the district of Mühldorf am Inn as a full-service partner for compensation according to BayKompV. We secure land in the Inn valley, in the Isen valley and in the surrounding hilly landscape, plan natural-region-appropriate measures for natural regions D65 and D66, coordinate them with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority (Untere Naturschutzbehörde) at the District Office and take on permanent management and monitoring. This gives project developers from industry, municipalities and infrastructure a legally secure and plannable compensation without their own administrative effort.
Typical measures in the district of Mühldorf am Inn
Floodplain restoration on the Inn
Reconnection of oxbows, development of floodplain forest and bank structures along the Inn and its barrages to enhance the Inn floodplains.
Develop slope forests
Conversion and extensification of the steep slope forests of the Inn valley towards structured, site-appropriate broadleaf mixed forests with old and dead wood content.
Watercourse margin strips on the Isen
Creation of bank vegetation and buffer strips on the Isen and adjacent tributaries to network watercourses and reduce nutrient inputs.
Wet meadows and meadow-breeding birds
Extensification of wet valley meadows with adapted mowing in favour of meadow-breeding birds such as the northern lapwing and species-rich meadow flora.
Spawning waters for amphibians
Creation and management of sunlit small water bodies to strengthen the designated great crested newt habitats and other amphibian occurrences in the district.
Hedgerows and traditional orchard in the hilly landscape
New establishment of hedgerows, field woodlands and traditional orchard meadows in the Isar-Inn hilly landscape to network habitats in the arable landscape.
Protected species in the Inn valley and Isen valley
Kingfisher
Breeds at steep banks of the Inn and Isen and is dependent on clean, fish-rich watercourses with near-natural riverbank cliffs.
About this species ›Great crested newt
Present in the district with specifically designated habitats, dependent on fish-free, well-sunlit spawning waters with structured surroundings.
About this species ›Bats
Find roosts and hunting grounds in the slope forests of the Inn valley and in traditional orchard stands; all species are strictly protected.
About this species ›Northern lapwing
Meadow-breeding bird of wet valley meadows and open field areas, which benefits from extensification and rewetting.
About this species ›Skylark
Characteristic species of open arable landscape in the hilly region, whose populations are under pressure from structurally poor fields.
About this species ›Sand lizard
Inhabits sun-exposed slopes, railway and road embankments and must often be secured through CEF measures in the event of impacts.
About this species ›Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?
Road construction and motorway A94
New construction and expansion sections of the A94, as well as bypasses and state roads, lead to substantial impacts with compensation obligations.
Railway expansion ABS 38
The expansion and electrification of the Munich, Mühldorf and Freilassing railway line require compensation for line and woodland impacts.
Commercial and industrial
Extensions of commercial and industrial areas in Waldkraiburg, Mühldorf and Töging take up open land and trigger compensation.
Freestanding photovoltaics
Solar parks on agricultural land require nature conservation support and compensation according to BayKompV.
