The District of Miltenberg at a glance
Schweinfurt district is located in the Lower Franconian basin region and extends from the warm, dry Schweinfurt Basin to the woodland areas of the Steigerwald in the south. It borders the districts of Haßberge, Rhön-Grabfeld, Kitzingen, Main-Spessart and Bad Kissingen, as well as Hesse and Thuringia. The district office is located in the surrounded independent city of Schweinfurt.
Naturally, the district is divided between two major regions. The northern and central parts, the Schweinfurt Basin, belong to the Mainfränkische Platten (D56), characterised by warm, dry conditions in the rain shadow of Rhön and Spessart. This is one of Germany's warmest and driest regions. The southern part belongs to the Fränkisches Keuper-Liasland (D59) with the forested Steigerwald. The River Main is the defining watercourse connecting these areas.
Ecologically significant are the warm-dry habitats of the basin, thedry grasslands on limestone and the broadleaf forests of the Steigerwald. The district has numerous Natura 2000 areas, including the Main floodplain and important bat roosts. Wildcat populations inhabit the Steigerwald and Haßberge. The confluence areas of the Main tributaries (Wern, Lauer) and the extensive forests provide habitat for many protected species.
Economically, the district is characterised by a broad industrial base. Schweinfurt itself is known for ball-bearing manufacturing. Beyond the city, agriculture on the gault surfaces, forestry and trade logistics define the landscape. Conversion of former military sites, infrastructure expansion and renewable energy projects regularly generate compensation requirements under BayKompV.

Typical measures in the district of Miltenberg
greeNature solutions knows the natural region diversity of Schweinfurt district, from the open gault plains of the Mainfränkische Platten to the beech forests of the Steigerwald. We coordinate compensation concepts early with the lower nature conservation authority, secure suitable land and implement measures professionally. From impact-compensation assessment under BayKompV through CEF measures in species protection to entry of eco-points in the Bavarian eco-land register, we handle the entire process.
Skylark windows and flower areas
Creation of skylark windows, flower and arable margin strips in intensively-used gault plains to secure habitats for skylark, northern lapwing and field birds.
Traditional orchards and dry grassland
Management and new establishment of traditional orchard meadows and development of calcareous and dry grassland on warm-favoured Muschelkalk and Keuper slopes, among others as replacement habitat for sand lizard.
Restoration of Main and Wern
Development of watercourse margins, floodplain forest and riverbank structures on Main, Wern and Lauer to upgrade floodplain habitats for kingfisher and water-dependent species.
Forest conversion and old and deadwood
Natural forest conversion and preservation of old and deadwood in the Steigerwald and Haßberge to promote European wildcat, black stork and woodland-dependent bat species.
Small waters in the Main valley
Creation and networking of spawning waters and pools in the Main floodplain as habitat for amphibians, also as advance CEF measure.
Eco-account and land pool
Protected species in the Schweinfurt Basin and Steigerwald
Establishment of eco-account and pool areas with entry of eco-points in the Bavarian eco-land register, so compensation is available on schedule and BayKompV-compliant.
Skylark
About this species ›Characteristic species of the open gault plains of the Schweinfurt Basin whose populations suffer under intensive arable farming. Skylark windows and flower strips are typical measures.
Northern lapwing
About this species ›Breeds on wet meadows and arable land in the Main lowlands and gault landscape. As a highly endangered species, it requires special assessment under § 44 BNatSchG in impacts.
Sand lizard
About this species ›Inhabits slopes, vineyard abandonment areas and dry sites on warm-favoured slopes. Relocation and creation of sand and stone structures are common CEF measures.
European wildcat
About this species ›The Steigerwald and Haßberge are part of the distribution area of the European wildcat. Forest connectivity and old and deadwood structures secure its habitats.
Black stork
About this species ›Uses the low-disturbance, water-rich broadleaf forests of the Steigerwald as breeding and feeding habitat. Forest peace and intact stream valleys are critical for it.
Kingfisher
About this species ›Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?
Breeds on natural steep banks of Main and Wern. Restored watercourse sections and structurally-diverse riverbank areas promote its populations.
Energy and network infrastructure
The network hub Bergrheinfeld with the southern SuedLink endpoint, transformer stations and decommissioning and repurposing of the Grafenrheinfeld power plant site generate substantial compensation requirements.
Road and transport projects
Expansion and new construction on motorways A70 and A71 and on federal and district roads lead to impacts on soil, habitats and living spaces that must be compensated.
Commercial and settlement development
New commercial and industrial areas and residential development in Schweinfurt and surrounding municipalities require compensation land.
