The City of Memmingen at a glance

Memmingen is an independent city in the Bavarian administrative region Swabia and serves as a regional centre for western Allgäu and Upper Swabia. The city lies in the Memmingen dry valley west of the Iller and is completely surrounded to the north, east and south by Unterallgäu district.

In natural region terms, the city area belongs to the BfN natural region D64 (Danube-Iller-Lech plains), characterised by ice-age gravel plains, loess deposits and the broad Iller valley. To the west, the Iller forms the boundary with Baden-Württemberg; the Memminger Ach runs through the city area.

Ecologically significant are the naturalised floodplain areas along the Iller. The Natura 2000 site Lower Iller floodplains (7726-371) and several landscape protection areas on the lower Iller secure floodplain forest, wet meadows and watercourse sections as habitat and habitat network.

As a transport node at the cross of A7 and A96 with Allgäu Airport, Memmingen is a strong economic, logistics and industrial site. Housing construction, commercial development and infrastructure projects regularly trigger compensation requirements according to the Bavarian Compensation Ordinance (BayKompV).

✅ greeNature on the ground

Our Bavarian office in Kastl (Altötting district) and our statewide project work make us familiar with Swabian compensation law. We know the responsible lower nature conservation authority of the city of Memmingen, the land situation in the Iller valley and the requirements of BayKompV in the Danube-Iller region from practice.

Compensation in the city

Typical measures in the city of Memmingen

💧

Watercourse restoration

Upgrading of Memminger Ach and Iller secondary watercourses through bank decoupling, establishment of gravel bars and floodplain waters, improvement of continuity as habitat for fish and kingfisher.

🌳

Floodplain forest development

Development and supplementation of site-appropriate softwood and hardwood floodplains along the Iller, connection to the Natura 2000 site Lower Iller floodplains to strengthen habitat network.

🧱

De-sealing in urban space

Removal of sealed surfaces on former industrial and transport areas, restoration of soil function and infiltration, urban greening and naturalised open areas.

🌾

Grassland upgrading in the surrounding area

Extensification of intensively used meadows and arable on Iller gravel plains, development of species-rich damp and lean meadows as habitat for meadow-breeding birds and insects.

🌿

Hedgerows and habitat network

Establishment of hedgerows, field woodland and margins in the agricultural landscape around Memmingen, stepping-stone habitats between Iller valley and dry valley for brown hare, grey partridge and wild bees.

🦎

Species protection CEF/FCS

Sand lizard habitats on railway and road slopes, bat roosts in buildings and woodland, replacement spawning waters for amphibians, tailored according to BayKompV.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Iller valley and Memmingen dry valley

🐦

Kingfisher on the Iller

Naturalised steep banks and bank collapse areas along Iller and Memminger Ach offer the kingfisher breeding opportunities. Typical CEF measures are steep bank remodelling and securing of fish-rich, clear watercourse sections.

🦎

Sand lizard in the dry valley

The warm-dry slopes of the Memmingen dry valley as well as railway and road embankments are habitat for the sand lizard. It is among the most common target species in construction and infrastructure projects in the city area.

About this species ›
🐸

Amphibians in the Iller floodplains

Common toad, common frog and yellow-bellied toad use floodplain waters and small waters in the Iller valley. Newly established spawning waters are a proven compensation measure for impacts on water-adjacent areas.

About this species ›
🦇

Bats in city and floodplain

Common pipistrelle, greater mouse-eared bat and brown long-eared bat hunt along the Iller floodplains and in woodland structures. Roosts in old buildings and tree holes require species protection examinations according to § 44 BNatSchG when undergoing renovation and demolition.

About this species ›
🌾

Skylark in agricultural land

The open arable landscapes on the gravel plains around Memmingen are breeding areas for the skylark. Skylark patches and extensive arable margins serve as CEF measures when land is lost to building.

About this species ›
🐦

Northern lapwing on damp meadows

Damp meadows and arable depressions in the surrounding area offer the northern lapwing breeding sites. Rewetting and grassland extensification secure and create habitats for this highly endangered meadow-breeding bird species.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

🏘️

Residential development

New residential quarters and densification in Memmingen and city districts (including Amendingen, Steinheim) require nature conservation compensation. Owners of suitable areas in the surrounding area can benefit as land providers.

🏭

Commerce and logistics

As a site at the A7/A96 motorway junction with Allgäu Airport, Memmingen regularly designates commercial and logistics areas. The associated sealing triggers substantial compensation requirements according to BayKompV.

🛤️

Traffic and infrastructure

Expansion of roads, railway routes (Iller valley railway, Allgäu railway) and bridge structures over Iller and Memminger Ach lead to impacts requiring compensation and replacement measures as well as CEF measures.

⚡

Energy and networks

Open-field photovoltaic systems on conversion and marginal income sites and expansion of pipeline routes create compensation obligations and species protection requirements.
