The District of Haßberge at a glance

The district of Haßberge forms the northeastern edge of the Unterfranken administrative region and borders Thuringia. The district seat of Haßfurt lies on the Main, which runs through the district from east to west. Defining features are the wooded Keuper uplands of the Haßberge in the northeast, the open Gäu landscape in the west, and the foothills of the Steigerwald south of the Main.

Geologically, the district belongs predominantly to the Fränkisches Keuper-Liasland (BfN natural region D59). Sandstone keuper forms the wooded ridges of the Haßberge and the Itz-Baunach hill country, while in the west the loess-covered Muschelkalk plateaus of the Mainfränkische Platten (D56) reach into the district. The Main valley, with its terraces, remnant floodplain woodland and dry slopes on the Haßberge escarpment, creates a small-scale mosaic of different sites.

Ecologically, the large broadleaf woodlands of the Haßberge and Steigerwald, as well as the river and meadow valleys of the Main, Baunach, Nassach and Itz, are significant. Around 19 percent of the district's area is secured as Natura 2000 sites, including the Haßbergetrauf und Bundorfer Wald Special Protection Area (DE-5728-471), as well as numerous FFH sites such as the Mainaue between Eltmann and Haßfurt (DE-5929-372) and the Haßbergetrauf von Zeil am Main bis Königsberg (DE-5929-371).

Economically, the district has a rural character, with agriculture and forestry, small and medium-sized businesses, and close ties to the neighbouring Schweinfurt economic area. The expansion of commercial and residential areas, transport projects, the expansion of renewable energy and sand and gravel extraction in the Main valley regularly trigger compensation and replacement obligations under the BayKompV.

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of Haßberge

🌳

Forest conversion and broadleaf woodland

Developing site-appropriate mixed broadleaf woodland of beech, oak and hornbeam in the Keuper uplands of the Haßberge, enhancing structurally poor conifer plantations into near-natural stands with old and dead wood.

💧

Restoration of watercourses

Restoring near-natural watercourses on the Baunach, Nassach and Itz, creating riparian buffer strips and gallery floodplain woodland, improving connectivity for fish and aquatic fauna.

🌾

Grassland extensification

Converting intensively used land into species-rich meadows and wet grassland in the valleys of the Main and Baunach, habitat for meadow-breeding birds and flower-visiting insects.

🍎

Traditional orchards and calcareous grassland

Establishing and managing traditional orchards and dry grassland on the sandstone slopes of the Haßbergetrauf, supporting wild bees, reptiles and cavity-nesting bird species.

🦇

Species protection CEF and FCS

Tailored measures under the BayKompV, such as bat roosts for greater mouse-eared bat colonies, steep kingfisher banks on watercourses, and sand lizard habitats on embankments and dry sites.

🌿

Hedgerows and habitat network

Establishing hedgerows, field copses and field margins in the cleared Gäu landscape in the west of the district, stepping stones for the hazel dormouse, brown hare and small game between woodland and open land.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Haßberge and the Franconian Main valley

🦇

Greater mouse-eared bat and bats

The Haßberge and the Itz-Baunach hill country are home to nationally significant maternity roosts of the greater mouse-eared bat. Securing roosts in roof structures and trees, as well as enhancements near hunting grounds, are typical CEF measures.

🐈

European wildcat

The large, continuous broadleaf woodland of the Haßberge and Steigerwald is among the core areas of the European wildcat in Bavaria. Woodland edge design and a habitat network support the re-expansion of this strictly protected species.

🕊️

Black stork

The black stork breeds in the undisturbed woodland complexes with near-natural streams. Quiet nest sites and intact feeding waters are essential for conserving the population and are relevant to species protection law for impacts.

🐦

Kingfisher

On the Main, Baunach and Nassach, the kingfisher finds steep banks and fish-rich waters. Creating and maintaining eroding banks and structurally rich bank zones are among the proven compensation measures.

🦎

Sand lizard

The sunlit dry grassland and sandstone slopes of the Haßbergetrauf, as well as railway and path embankments, are important habitats of the sand lizard. It is a frequent target species in infrastructure and extraction projects.

🌾

Skylark

The skylark, a characteristic species of farmland, breeds in the open Gäu landscape in the west of the district. Flowering strips, skylark plots and extensively managed field margins secure its population.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

⚡

Renewable energy

Wind energy sites on the wooded ridges and ground-mounted photovoltaic areas in the Gäu landscape generate a compensation requirement. greeNature develops suitable compensation areas and CEF measures for birds of prey and bats.

🏗️

Raw material extraction in the Main valley

Sand and gravel extraction along the Main impacts floodplain and terrace sites. Restoring exhausted extraction sites and creating new watercourse habitats are typical replacement measures under the BayKompV.

🛤️

Infrastructure and transport

Bypasses, road expansion and the expansion of railway lines in the Main valley trigger compensation and replacement obligations. We provide the ecological support and land provision.

🏘️

Settlement and commerce

New residential and commercial areas in Haßfurt, Zeil am Main, Knetzgau and around the Schweinfurt economic area require compensation. Farmers can contribute suitable land as compensation areas.
