The District of Erlangen-Höchstadt at a glance
Erlangen-Höchstadt district is located in northern Middle Franconia and surrounds the independent city of Erlangen, in which the district seat (district office) is also located. The district belongs to the Nuremberg metropolitan region and extends from the Aisch valley in the west via the Regnitz valley to the foothills of the Northern Franconian Alb in the east.
Naturally, the district area predominantly belongs to the Fränkisches Keuper-Liasland (D59) with the Middle Franconian Basin, while the eastern edge leads into the foothills of the Franconian Alb (D60). Characteristic are the sandy Keuper soils of the Franconian sand axis, the light pine forests of the Reichswald and the wide floodplains of Regnitz and Aisch. The lowest point lies in the Aisch valley at approximately 258 m, the highest areas in the east reach over 500 m.
Ecologically particularly valuable is the Aisch valley pond landscape, one of the largest contiguous carp pond regions in Europe, whose vegetation and reed beds harbour numerous protected species. The district encompasses eight FFH areas, several nature conservation areas such as the bird reserve Weihergebiet near Mohrhof and shares in the SPA bird protection area Regnitz valley and lower Wiesent valley (DE-6332-471). Sand grassland and open sand areas along the Franconian sand axis supplement the habitat mosaic.
Economically, the district is among Germany's most future-proof regions. In Herzogenaurach are the global companies adidas, Puma and Schaeffler, and proximity to the Erlangen economic region (Siemens, medical technology) ensures continuous commercial and settlement development. Transport projects such as the ICE expansion Nuremberg,Erlangen,Bamberg, the A3 expansion and the planned city-regional train regularly generate substantial compensation requirements under BayKompV.

Typical measures in the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt
Pond and weir restoration
Extensification and reactivation of carp ponds in the Aisch valley, development of vegetation and reed beds, creation of spawning waters for great crested newt and amphibians under BayKompV.
Wet meadows and grassland extensification
Conversion of intensively-used areas into species-rich wet and moist meadows in the Regnitz and Aisch floodplains, habitat for meadow-breeding birds such as northern lapwing.
Sand grassland and heath areas
Restoration of open sand areas and grassland along the Franconian sand axis, management clearing and removal of fertility as habitat for sand lizard and skylark.
Traditional orchards and hedgerows
Establishment of traditional orchard stands and hedge structures in the Alb foothills and in the field landscape, stepping-stone habitats and habitat network for insects, birds and small mammals.
Floodplain forest and riparian vegetation
Development of site-appropriate riparian vegetation and floodplain edges on Regnitz and Aisch, black alder and ash, creation of steep banks and breeding banks for the kingfisher.
Species protection CEF/FCS
Advance CEF measures for sand lizard on railway embankments and sand sites, bat roosts, spawning waters for great crested newt, tailored to § 44 BNatSchG.
Protected species in the Aisch valley and Middle Franconian Basin
Northern lapwing
The northern lapwing breeds on the wet and moist meadows of the Regnitz and Aisch floodplains. Grassland extensification, rewetting and creation of bays are typical measures to support this endangered meadow-breeding bird.
About this species ›Kingfisher
On Regnitz, Aisch and the ponds of the Aisch valley, the kingfisher finds suitable waters. CEF measures include creation of steep and breeding banks and structurally-diverse, fish-rich riverbank areas.
About this species ›Great crested newt
The pond landscape of the Aisch valley is a core area for the great crested newt (Annex II FFH Directive). Newly-created, fish-free spawning waters with structurally-rich surroundings are among frequent compensation measures.
About this species ›Sand lizard
On the sand sites of the Franconian sand axis, railway embankments and forest edges, the sand lizard is widespread. It is a frequent target species in infrastructure and settlement projects, usually via advance CEF measures.
About this species ›Skylark
The skylark inhabits the open agricultural landscape and sand grassland of the district. Skylark windows, extensive arable margins and poor open areas promote this declining field bird species.
About this species ›Bats
Forests, traditional orchard stands and watercourses provide hunting and roost habitats for bats. Roost boxes on buildings and in old trees and structurally-diverse linkage lines are proven FCS measures.
About this species ›Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?
Industry and commerce
In Herzogenaurach and around Erlangen, global companies such as adidas, Puma and Schaeffler expand their sites. New operational, logistics and office buildings and industrial area designations regularly trigger compensation and replacement obligations under BayKompV.
Infrastructure and transport
The four-track ICE expansion Nuremberg,Erlangen,Bamberg (VDE 8.1), the A3 expansion, bypass roads and the planned city-regional train require extensive nature conservation compensation and species protection CEF measures.
Settlement development
Continued migration into the Nuremberg metropolitan region drives residential construction and densification projects in Herzogenaurach, Baiersdorf, Höchstadt and surrounding municipalities. Property owners can offer their land as compensation areas.
Energy and renewables
Free-area photovoltaic installations on sandy marginal yield sites and wind power projects require nature conservation compensation and FCS measures for birds of prey and other wind-sensitive species.
