The District of Aschaffenburg at a glance

The district of Aschaffenburg lies in the extreme northwest of Bavaria on the Bayerischer Untermain and forms the border with Hesse. The seat of administration is located in the independent city of Aschaffenburg, which does not itself belong to the district. At around 699 km², the district is one of the smaller ones in Bavaria by area, yet with around 171,000 inhabitants it is the most populous district in Unterfranken. The 32 municipalities range from the densely populated Main valley to the wooded heights of the Spessart.

In landscape terms, two very different areas shape the district. In the north and east rises the Spessart, a large continuous forest area over Buntsandstein, assigned to the BfN natural region D55 (Odenwald, Spessart and Südrhön). In the south and west lie the fertile, partly loess-covered plains of the Bachgau and the Untermainebene, which belong to natural region D53 (Oberrheinisches Tiefland and Rhein-Main-Tiefland). The red Buntsandstein has shaped the region for centuries as a building material and through the stone industry on the Untermain.

Ecologically, the Hochspessart is of supra-regional importance. Extensive broadleaf woodland rich in old and dead wood forms the basis for the Hochspessart FFH site and the Spessart Special Protection Area (SPA) within the Natura 2000 network. The Spessart is home to one of the significant populations of the European wildcat, as well as species such as the black stork, Bechstein's bat and the hazel dormouse. Near-natural watercourse and floodplain habitats are found along the Main, Kahl and Aschaff.

Economically, the district is strong and diversely positioned. Industry, high-tech businesses and logistics are concentrated along the A3 and A45 and in the Main valley, while the Untermain conurbation generates ongoing settlement and commercial pressure. New commercial areas, infrastructure projects, housing development and ground-mounted photovoltaics regularly trigger impacts on nature and landscape. This creates a concrete need for legally secure compensation under the BayKompV, for which greeNature provides available eco-points and suitable compensation areas.

✅ greeNature on the ground

greeNature knows the ecological requirements on the Bayerischer Untermain and in the Spessart. We secure land, develop suitable enhancement measures and coordinate them with the lower nature conservation authority at the Aschaffenburg District Office. As a full-service partner, we take on planning, implementation, monitoring and the booking of recognised eco-points, so you can meet your compensation obligation under the BayKompV without acquiring land yourself.

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of Aschaffenburg

🌳

Near-natural forest development

Enhancing woodland stands in the Spessart through the enrichment of old and dead wood, habitat trees and conversion towards structurally rich mixed broadleaf woodland.

💧

Watercourse restoration

Removing engineered structures and developing near-natural banks on Main tributaries such as the Kahl and Aschaff, benefiting the kingfisher and watercourse-bound species.

🍎

Traditional orchards in the Bachgau

Establishing and managing extensively managed traditional orchards in the open areas of the Untermain as a valuable habitat and a defining landscape feature.

🌾

Grassland extensification

Converting intensively used land into species-rich grassland and calcareous grassland on Buntsandstein sites, with reduced fertilisation and adapted mowing.

🐾

Habitat network for the European wildcat

Developing hedgerows, woodland edges and migration corridors to connect the Spessart woodlands and secure the wildcat population.

🦎

CEF measures for the sand lizard

Advance compensation measures with stone piles, sand lenses and sunlit field margins for settlement and commercial projects under § 44 BNatSchG.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Bayerischer Untermain and Spessart

🐾

European wildcat

The Spessart is a core area for the wildcat in Germany. Large, continuous woodlands and migration corridors are essential for the conservation of the population.

About this species ›
🕊️

Black stork

The shy black stork breeds in undisturbed woodland areas of the Hochspessart and uses near-natural streams and wetland habitats to forage.

About this species ›
🦇

Bechstein's bat

Bechstein's bat, which depends on old broadleaf woodland, is a flagship species of the Hochspessart FFH site and relies on old trees rich in cavities.

About this species ›
🐭

Hazel dormouse

The hazel dormouse inhabits structurally rich woodland edges, hedgerows and undergrowth. It is strictly protected under § 44 BNatSchG and must be taken into account in impacts.

About this species ›
🐦

Kingfisher

On the Main, Kahl and Aschaff, the kingfisher finds near-natural watercourse sections with steep banks. Restoration measures specifically improve its habitat.

About this species ›
🦎

Sand lizard

The sand lizard inhabits sunlit, sandy sites in the Untermain and frequently occurs around construction and commercial projects, where CEF measures become necessary.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

🏭

Commerce and industry

The establishment and expansion of industrial, high-tech and logistics businesses along the A3 and in the Main valley require compensation for land sealing and habitat loss.

🛣️

Transport infrastructure

Expanding and building new roads around the A3 and A45, as well as on state and district roads, impact nature and landscape and trigger compensation obligations.

🏘️

Settlement development

New residential and building areas in the densely populated Untermain conurbation make species protection assessments and compensation areas necessary.

☀️

Renewable energy

Ground-mounted photovoltaics and further energy projects use up open land and require ecological compensation under the BayKompV.

Frequently asked questions

All about eco-points
in the district of Aschaffenburg

Anyone who impacts nature and landscape with a construction project must compensate for the impact under the Bavarian Compensation Ordinance (BayKompV). Eco-points document the enhancement carried out and can be legally assigned to your project.
The lower nature conservation authority at the Aschaffenburg District Office, Bayernstraße 18, 63739 Aschaffenburg, is responsible. greeNature coordinates measures and the assessment with the authority.
The district lies within the BfN natural regions D55 (Odenwald, Spessart and Südrhön) with the Spessart, and D53 (Oberrheinisches Tiefland and Rhein-Main-Tiefland) with the Bachgau and the Untermainebene. The natural region assignment is important for the ecological suitability of compensation areas.
The BayKompV governs how impacts are assessed and compensated in Bavaria. It sets out the scope and type of compensation measures. greeNature determines the compensation requirement and provides recognised eco-points.
In the district, the European wildcat, black stork, bat species, hazel dormouse, kingfisher and sand lizard are among the relevant species. Where they are affected, the prohibited acts under § 44 BNatSchG must be assessed and, where necessary, CEF measures implemented.
greeNature has prepared land and land under development, so eco-points can be assigned at short notice. Contact us early so we can meet the requirement for your project precisely.
