The District of Ansbach at a glance

Ansbach district is located in western Middle Franconia and is, at approximately 1,971 km², Bavaria's largest district by area. It surrounds in ring-form the independent city of Ansbach, which is also the seat of the district office, and borders Baden-Württemberg in the west. The 58 towns, market towns and municipalities include historic places such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbühl on the Romantic Road.

Landscape-wise, two natural regions characterise the district area. The north-west and centre belong to the Fränkisches Keuper-Liasland (D59) with the forested Keuper stage of the Franconian Heights and the open Middle Franconian Basin. The south-west around Dinkelsbühl leads into the Schwäbisches Keuper-Liasland (D58). The Hesselberg rises as a distinctive elevation at 689 metres as Middle Franconia's highest mountain.

Ecologically significant are the wide valley floodplains. The Wiesmet in the Altmühl and Wörnitz valleys ranks among southern Germany's largest meadow-breeding bird areas, where great snipe, black-tailed godwit, northern lapwing and common snipe breed. The FFH area Wörnitz valley (DE 7029-371) harbours Bavaria's second-largest marsh harrier population in the border area with the Nördlinger Ries. Overall, 20 Natura 2000 areas lie in the district (17 FFH areas and 3 SPAs).

Economically, the district is rural in character, with strong agriculture and forestry, medium-sized commerce and tourism. Compensation requirements under BayKompV arise mainly from transport and infrastructure projects (Feuchtwangen/Crailsheim motorway junction on A6 and A7, federal roads, railway lines), renewable energy expansion on the high areas of the Franconian Heights and commercial and residential development.

greeNature solutions knows the nature conservation requirements in western Middle Franconia from practice and works with landowners, farmers and municipalities. We secure suitable areas in natural regions D59 and D58, plan natural region-appropriate measures under BayKompV, coordinate them with the lower nature conservation authority at the District office Ansbach and handle implementation, permanent management and documentation. This way, project developers in Ansbach district receive eco-points from a single source without having to conduct land acquisition and authority procedures themselves.

Compensation in the district

Typical measures in the district of Ansbach

🐦

Meadow-breeding bird protection in the Wiesmet

Extensification and rewetting of wet grassland in the Altmühl and Wörnitz valleys, with adapted mowing schedules, bays and wet areas for great snipe, black-tailed godwit, northern lapwing and common snipe.

💧

Watercourse restoration

Removal of riverbank structures and creation of natural structures on Altmühl, Wörnitz, Tauber and Fränkische Rezat, with steep banks, riparian vegetation and floodplain edges as habitat for kingfisher and beaver.

🍎

Traditional orchards

Establishment and management of tall traditional orchard stands on the slopes of the Franconian Heights, with extensive undergrowth as habitat for little owl, wryneck, wild bees and cavity-dwelling bats.

🦎

Species protection CEF/FCS

Advance measures for sand lizard on railway and road slopes, bat roosts in traditional orchards and old buildings and skylark windows in the agricultural landscape, tailored to § 44 BNatSchG.

🌳

New afforestation and forest conversion

Site-appropriate oak-hornbeam and beech forests on Keuper sites and conversion of unnatural conifer stands to climate-resilient deciduous mixed forests with old and deadwood structures.

🌾

Hedgerows and habitat network

Establishment of hedgerows, copses and margins in the simplified arable landscape of the Middle Franconian Basin as stepping-stone habitats for grey partridge, great grey shrike, brown hare and wild bees.

Species diversity

Protected species in the Franconian Heights and Middle Franconian Basin

🐦

Meadow-breeding birds in the Wiesmet

The Altmühl and Wörnitz valley harbour great snipe, black-tailed godwit, northern lapwing and common snipe. Typical CEF measures are rewetting, bays and late, breeding-time-adapted mowing on extensive wet grassland.

About this species ›
🌾

Skylark and calandra lark

Ground-nesting field birds are declining in the open agricultural landscape of the Middle Franconian Basin. Skylark windows, multi-year flower strips and extensive arable margins are effective and creditable upgrades.

About this species ›
🦎

Sand lizard

The thermophilic species inhabits Keuper sandstone slopes, embankments, railway embankments and dry stone walls. For impacts, sand lenses, stone piles and sunny margins as advance CEF measures under § 44 BNatSchG are required.

About this species ›
🦇

Bats

The broadleaf forests of the Franconian Heights and traditional orchard stands and the historic town centres of Rothenburg and Dinkelsbühl provide roosts for greater mouse-eared bat, Bechstein's bat and brown long-eared bat. Roost and hunting area measures are well implementable.

About this species ›
🐦

Kingfisher and beaver

Altmühl, Wörnitz, Tauber and Fränkische Rezat are habitat for kingfisher and beaver. Natural riverbank structures, steep banks and watercourse margins create suitable breeding and feeding habitats with high compensation value.

About this species ›
🐸

Great crested newt and amphibians

In the pond and weir landscapes of the district, great crested newt, tree frog and other amphibians spawn. Creation of sunny, fish-free small ponds secures breeding sites and networks the habitat network.

Typical projects

Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?

🛣️

Transport and infrastructure

The district is traversed by motorways A6 (Nuremberg, Heilbronn) and A7 (Würzburg, Ulm) with the Feuchtwangen/Crailsheim motorway junction. Expansion of federal and state roads, bypass roads and railway lines regularly trigger compensation and replacement obligations under BayKompV.

⚡

Renewable energies

Wind power sites on the high areas of the Franconian Heights and free-area photovoltaic installations in the agricultural landscape require nature conservation compensation and frequently FCS measures for wind-sensitive bird and bat species.

🏭

Commerce and settlement

Designation of commercial and industrial areas and residential development in centres such as Rothenburg, Dinkelsbühl, Feuchtwangen and Heilsbronn generate compensation requirements. Land owners can offer their arable land as compensation areas.

🚜

Agriculture and land consolidation

Land consolidation procedures, farm relocations and expansion of agricultural roads in the intensively-used field landscape trigger impact mitigation and habitat network measures.
