Eco-points and compensation areas
District of Calw
Calw District lies in the North Black Forest between the valleys of Enz and Nagold. greeNature plans, secures and implements compensation measures here under the Eco-account Regulation (ÖKVO) and guides project developers from impact assessment through to permanent site management.
The District of Calw at a glance
Calw District ranks among the most forest-rich districts in Baden-Württemberg. The western and central part lies in the North Black Forest with extensive conifer and mixed forests, while to the east and south the more open landscapes of the Upper Gäue and Heckengäu extend.
For impacts on nature and landscape, §§ 13 to 15 BNatSchG apply. In Baden-Württemberg, assessment is done under the Eco-account Regulation (ÖKVO) in eco-points. Compensation measures can be directly assigned to a project or created beforehand via an eco-account.
greeNature develops suitable compensation and eco-account areas in the district for developers, municipalities and enterprises. We coordinate the measures with the lower nature conservation authority and, on request, take on complete implementation including monitoring and long-term maintenance.

🌿 Ecological features
- One of Baden-Württemberg's most forest-rich districts, large parts lie in Schwarzwald Mitte/Nord Nature Park.
- In the eastern Heckengäu, traditional orchards, stone lines and calcareous grasslands shape the cultural landscape.
- 26 nature reserves with about 2,230 hectares and several FFH and bird protection sites in the Natura 2000 network.
- The rivers Nagold, Enz and Würm offer potential for watercourse restoration and floodplain development.
- The North Black Forest is one of the priority areas for wind energy, corresponding installations create compensation requirements.
- Infrastructure projects such as the reactivated Hermann Hesse Railway required extensive species protection measures.
✅ greeNature on the ground
greeNature operates nationwide and manages compensation projects in Calw District with compensation and eco-account areas suited to the natural region. We observe the requirements of the Eco-account Regulation, coordinate the measures with the lower nature conservation authority at Calw district office and, on request, take on planning, implementation, monitoring and permanent management.
Typical measures in the district of Calw
Create and manage traditional orchards
New creation and renovation of traditional orchard stands in the Heckengäu, a habitat typical of the region with high ecological value.
Restore flowing watercourses
Removal of riverbank paving and development of near-natural banks on Nagold, Enz and Würm, linked with watercourse margins and floodplain development.
Near-natural forest conversion
Conversion of structurally poor conifer forests to site-appropriate mixed forests and development of old and dead wood structures in the Black Forest.
Dry-stone walls and stone lines
Creation and management of stone lines and dry-stone walls as habitat for reptiles and insects in the Gäu landscapes.
Extensify grassland
Conversion of intensively managed areas into species-rich calcareous grasslands and extensive pastures with adapted mowing.
Develop small waterbodies
Creation of spawning waters and ponds for amphibians and dragonflies at suitable sites.
Protected species in the North Black Forest and Upper Gäue
Sand lizard
Inhabits stone lines, railway embankments and sunny slopes in the Heckengäu. During impacts, advance compensation measures (CEF) and relocations are often required.
About this species ›Skylark
Breeds in the open arable areas of the Upper Gäue. The ground-nesting bird responds sensitively to land loss, which is why compensation is achieved via lark windows and extensive margin strips.
About this species ›European wildcat
The European wildcat has recolonised the North Black Forest. It requires disturbance-free, dead-wood-rich forests and continuous habitat networks.
About this species ›Hazel dormouse
Lives in structurally rich forest edges, hedgerows and shrub areas. As a strictly protected species under § 44 BNatSchG, it requires special consideration during hedge felling.
About this species ›Bats
Several species use the forests and waterbodies as hunting and resting areas. On the Hermann Hesse Railway, bat occurrences led to extensive protection conditions.
About this species ›Kingfisher
Breeds at near-natural sections of Nagold and Enz in steep banks. Watercourse restoration improves its food and breeding habitat.
About this species ›Which projects trigger a compensation obligation?
Hermann Hesse Railway reactivation
The rail connection from Calw to Weil der Stadt was reactivated. Impacts on hedgerows and bat roosts required species protection and compensation measures.
Wind energy in the North Black Forest
Expansion and repowering of wind farms in the highlands of the Black Forest create compensation requirements for forest, soil and landscape image.
Federal roads and town bypasses
Expansion and relocation of federal roads such as B 463 and B 295 require compensation for land sealing and habitat loss.
Residential and business areas
New building and business areas in Calw, Nagold and other municipalities trigger impacts that are compensated via eco-points.
