What are eco-points?
Eco-points explained simply: definition, how they arise in the eco-account, the buying process, and assessment under BayKompV. The guide from greeNature solutions.
Eco-points explained simply
Eco-points are the statutory settlement unit for compensation under nature conservation law under the Federal Nature Conservation Act. Anyone who has an impact on nature and landscape, for example through construction, infrastructure or forest clearance, must offset that impact. Eco-points make this compensation measurable and tradeable.
How eco-points arise
Eco-points arise from the ecological upgrading of areas in a state-recognised eco-account. Typical upgrading measures include the restoration of watercourses and floodplains, the creation of habitats and wet areas, the development of species-rich extensively managed grassland, and afforestation and traditional orchards. The responsible nature conservation authority confirms the upgrade and credits the corresponding points.
The buying process
- The compensation requirement of your project is determined.
- Suitable measures from an eco-account are allocated.
- The responsible authority approves.
- The eco-points are debited and recorded in the register.
The major advantage of buying from an existing eco-account lies in speed. The measures are already implemented and confirmed by the authority, which creates planning certainty in the permitting procedure.
Assessment under BayKompV
In Bavaria, assessment follows the Bavarian Compensation Ordinance and is expressed in value points. The natural region in which the impact lies is decisive. That is why greeNature offers eco-points specifically by natural region and allocates your impact to the matching pool.
